Evening lads and lassies,

Have been rooting around learning bit by bit, so thank you for that!

We're based in Meath, have been looking for a camper for a while...

Short term, something to get out and about in Ireland in, but longer term would like to get to the continent for a few weeks at a time.

Can I ask, do you think that's realistic in something like a 96 transit? (Rimor body?) Or better going up the years a few?

Any we've looked at so far have been ruled out either for damp or too little a payload... Which was ruled more out than I would've expected!

The older the van the more the reliability providing it has been well maintained. I’ve been to Spain twice in a ‘92 Talbot Express, never missed a beat. Electronics in vehicles is the work of the devil!

Agree!

Out of interest... At what point is rust beyond reasonable... Guessing we're going to see bits of surface rust etc. but can that be treated and sealed? Or once there's any is it too late?

We did this 4 years ago ,bought a small van ,to see if we wanted camper vanning/Motorhomeing for long term or not ,then if could see a long term interest we would buy a bigger van for longer trip’s with a bit more luxury and room, the trouble is even older vans are expensive so you might find you have to spend a considerable amount of money just to try it out short term, good luck with your search

Oh we know we love it, bitten by the big before...

It is a bit disheartening out there though. We're pretty much driving around doing free hab checks for sponges on wheels 😲

Might be longer at this search than I initially thought!

Look across the water ( not the one next door) to the really big island, where they use the same money as we do. In an hour's drive today we passed 7 or 8 lots full of M/H and camper vans. Where there are new ones bought there are second hand ones for sale.

As you say, damp is your biggest concern. Surface rust is unavoidable and easily treated. Set your budget and just hope luck is on your side. Best move we ever made.

Cheers folks! Having a good root around in Germany..... figuring for a 20-25k van, a safe (ish) figure would be to add 4k vrt and based on 30k pricing here for 2004 models...

considering looking at a Rimor Superbrig on vw lt35 this evening... saw a couple of posts about them being slightly rare and also about axle weights. I've gotten a copy of the cvrt and there would be 600kg payload, which would be adequate. figuring buying private I'd rather spend less and have a buffer for problems!!

I would advise adding 20/22% on the sale price of anything your looking at.
The reason, VRT, tax/ins, transport out /shipping home, maybe adding Solar, outfitting it.
Consider looking close to an Airport or port, going to check it out, having some local look it over.

Hi folks, hope you're getting to enjoy the sun! Quick question, will a painless damp meter be capable of detecting damp on a fiberglass construction?

It has a index function that does moisture comparatively so I'm figuring that'll be indicative. Thanks a mill for replies I'm advance!

So the answer to this, turns out to be yes!

Another 4 hour round trip.... This time physical water on the inner walls. And on the driest day we've had!!

Cheers!

An awful lot of crap alright. And pretty frustrating as you know someone is going to go along and buy it! Not one of the 4 damp vehicles have been taken down or reduced in price and that included one that was through a mh breaker of sorts...

I just need to keep reminding myself that good things are meant to come to those that wait 😂
