Just drove out to Howth at 11.30 intending to stay the night. It was packed, nor even a car space available. Back home now. Passed two other campers heading there, but I suspect they too will have to abandon the overnight.

Stayed in Howth last Tuesday night I think about 8 vans altogether 2 of which were French. For me Howth is a Monday/Thursday call, this suits us oldies, no hassle. I would think once the nights start to close in things may change O-)

Stayed once to break up the journey to The Burren & allow us to find some wonderful geocaches which are dotted about same. It was a Wednesday night and the main circle was full, about 3 other vans parked on the straight bit outside same. Can only imagine what the weekends must be like. Personally, I prefer somewhere a tad more quiet.

Anybody got a contact for the powers that be with responsibility for parking in the Howth area ??. The Council Exec Engineer for the area or the Municipal Officer (if there is one for Howth) can be a good place to start.

How about trying to get them to look at the Cobh exxperience and copying it. Sounds to me like the place is ripe for a designated motorhome parking area with services.

It is the harbor master that's in charge,he told me before that he dosnt mind mh parking once they don't get in the way of fisher man and there work.He also said that he gets complaints from the general public the way some vans park, taking up 4 bays, parking in disabled bay without a blue badge, taking out tables and chairs, ect.

the people that do these things should be told what they are doing wrong.on the continent ,that sort of behavour would not be allowed. we should all speak up in these situations and go and tell the offenders that it,s not on.i have done on some occasions and have been told what to do. maybe there should be a NAME AND SHAME section that we could use.

That's why it's important that we all carry a second cassette for the toilet especially if we are staying overbite week end. The folk at Howth don't mind us staying there but they don't like,us to empty our cassette in the public toilets. Let's respect their wishes and not spoil things.

I see no mention from Ken that emptying a cassette in public loo's at Howth is a problem. Personally I don't see a problem with that. Toilets are left by us as we found them. A much more environmentally friendly option than tipping it in the sea!

Chairs out and using more than one parking bay, well that's a different story.

The problem with that.... sometimes there is no other option but to park across a couple of bays in some places, some Motorhomers have even been asked to do that by whoever is in charge of parking. This happened on MHC, someone took a photo of just that type of incident and posted it, needless to say the owners of that Motorhome have not been back on MHC and I can't say I blame them.

Name and Shame would only work well if there was some research done on why that vehicle was parked like it was. Of course if it's at Howth then there is no excuse.

All I know is the last time we were there we were talking to locals and they said they did not like the public toilets being used to empty cassette toilets as they left a smell.

Didn't know that.

The best option of course is an Elsan point, but in the meantime the only option are the public toilets, not everyone can carry an extra cassette. Discreetly and cleanly brings less notice to the locals as we all know. I also see it as having no difference than using the toilets in their proper way than emptying a cassette into them, same amount, just all in one go! We need to speak to the local and keep informed of how and what we do so they don't get the wrong idea.

Hopefully Colin gets somewhere with his communication with the Harbour Master and a solution is found.

Hi when we were there I ask the guy how cleans the toilet block about emptying my cassette and he said it was no prob just don't make a mess , the best thing and what we do is I have a small fold up trolley which I put my cassette on but I cover it with a black bag so it don't look so bad when I'm going round to the toilet block

I have one of these I use it to take the cassette to shopping centre toilets and to other places where a shopping trolley is not out of place :D
With the bag taken off the trolley is useful for carrying gas bottles, water carriers, beach stuff other awkward/heavy stuff

No Hilton, the best plot is to obtain a granny shopping trolley. Perfect fit and unobtrusive.
