thanks for pics ally,

please take note, if you are using the facility, once you have filled with water, emptied waste etc, please move from the two marked spaces and park anywhere in the car park. this will enable other vans to avail of the facility.
the byelaws have been amended to allow overnight sleeping in the commons car park.

I take it Bob there is no problem using the EHU if you move off and park close by...or will the next people who use the space consider that the EHU is for that space?....to me it looks like it's two dedicated spaces for the unit and it's on a first come basis?

might have been gulls.
when we were there the rubbish was all round the bins, the groundsman said the gulls rip the bags from bins.

if it was a motorhomer they should be ashamed. i would lift the rubbish and f*** it back into their van.

we were there at weekend, electric wasnt working and the groundsman tried everything to get it fixed, he called engineer and they were out teatime saturday and got it going. well done to them.

if you are looking a good breakfast i can recommend the manor cafe,

the chinese also delivers to vans in the commons !!!

Fair point it might of been gulls. Guy seemed quite adamant that it was a Motorhome but who knows.

Great spot it is, beautiful views and great location. Now if they could just organise the weather...

Stayed at the Aire De Service in Donaghadee on Friday night, our first night at an Aire, will definitely be first of many.

Great spot, great for walking the dog and the views were superb. Certainly felt very safe as there were about a dozen vans in the carpark although we did have a car with young guys sitting alongside us playing music and as they drove off they shouted you are all a bunch of gypsie scum, obviously with the large number of vans they assumed the travelling folk had arrived in town lol.

The walk into town on Saturday was only a 10 minute stroll and it was a lovely little town with some quirky little shops, great for spending money in.

We will go again.

Have you been put off going to Donaghadee Aire due to the local yobo's?

We have a bit, but it wouldn't deter us, have spoke to three other MH owners that now won't go to it. Cars racing in and out and they parked beside us late at night and put music on full blast, have also been shouting stuff at Motorhomers.

So we should do something about it.

Let's email the council and let them know before it is ruined by a small minority.

What you think?

Anyone got a proper contact address?

i must say i have never had any of that, and was there just last weekend.

contacting the council would be the best way to tackle this as they could get local police to call round a time or two to discourage this activity.

Happened to us during the week, so perhaps that is the difference, but at least one of the other Motorhomers that spoke to me had trouble at the weekend.

Stayed there last friday night. absolutley no problems, in fact everone was very friendly and welcoming. Sometimes fools behave like fools it doesnt have to mean its a problem to stay there. When we are pushing for more aires should we really be reacting so strongly when when some fool says something unpleasant, its life its going to happen, if there was phsyical damage then its time to take action, but maybe we should be a little less sensitive, can we really expect police/councils to to protect us from naughty words?

I don't think it was a strong reaction, it has already put off three Motorhomers I was talking too, as I said it would not put me off.

I know what you are saying, but is it not better to let the Council know what is happening so perhaps the Police can deal with it, BEFORE it gets out of hand or puts more people off?

Family parks up in their Motorhome, car pulls in beside him at 2am and puts the stereo and bass bin on full blast, would he be back? not a chance, and the idea of the Aire is to welcome tourists who spend money in Donaghadee, if they get put off, no one uses it, then there is no need for it to be there.

Is this not the reason no-one stays at Carrick Aire? to many cars going in and out all night long. Maybe I'm wrong but I think doing nothing at this stage would only lead to more hassle further down the line.

What does everyone else think?

We have used the Aire at Donaghadee quite a few times without incident. I would not consider using the one in Carrickfergus due to it's location.

The problem stems from lack of good advice when councils are installing an Aire. There are many ways to reduce the likelihood of these type of problems but it should be addressed at the planning stage.

One of the main difficulties we have in this country is the lack of knowledge of motorhome tourism and what it can bring. Once residents and retailers realise the potential the bad behaviour may be more frowned upon.

Donaghadee is in general a friendly town. Probably the yobs are no different anywhere.
The local police station closed some time ago and Bangor station is not well endowed with cars, most cars come from Newtownards or Strandtown so not good if a quick response is required.
I think Viktor is on the right track, lobby MLA or councillors in the area, they put up the money for the facility and want a return. I think they would be disappointed if the aire was not used.

I understand what you are saying but I feel we need to give a little on this. Aires are generally in car parks and car parks are traditionally used by young uns in cars to mess around and play music, yes it can be annoying but mostly its not malicious,, and i understand that some people would not be comfortable with this, but also there are a lot of motorhomers who will never use aires and prefer the security of sites for this reason, each to his own. In a car park we cant expect to be sole users and unless it becomes persistently anti social we need to have tolerance. I guess what Im saying is we cant have our cake and eat it, I am grateful that councils are providing us with these facilities and complaining about isolated incidents can seem a little well ungrateful.
That said I have neither children or pets who could be disturbed alot more than I about this.
Cheers Anna

I think with Donaghadee it's a location problem that will occur now and again. The Aire is in the largest car park area of the town by the sea which is simply put - used by everyone from walking their dog to teenagers in cars just hanging around....really that's the problem. An Aire is best situated somewhere nearby a town but in sufficiently pleasant circumstances for people to enjoy staying there, but it really needs to be an area exclusive to campers / motorhomes without a huge area for 'drifting' or 'handbrake turns', or where a number of cars can gather for a party after dark.

Bangor is a different area for police coverage as far as I am aware and the responsibility I believe is covered by Ards which at best might have 3 vehicles out during a shift, so I wouldn't expect great police attention.

Think you have hit the nail on the head Viktor and that is a great solution and something for other councils to think about if and when they plan to provide aires.

Great to see that sort of enlightened approach from Ards council, its on our next trip list a contrast to the backward steps at Portrush blocking off Lansdown Crescent where there was lots of space.

Down at the car racing at Kirkistown this weekend, after it was over, thought we would stopover at Donaghadee, it was good to see 11 vans parked up there, we had a nice quiet night, that was our second time there with no issue. Lovely view to wake up to.
