CVRT Mirrors not wide enough!

Had the annual CVRT today and it failed because back of 'van was not fully visible!

Obviously the techies had not spotted this during the previous 23 tests (including the last in April of this year) as they were fitted by Fiat/Swift as standard (1991 Ducatoe Swift Kon Tiki). Was told that the RSA are getting tough on this. Hope those of us with older campers are not in for costly retrofits.

End of rant.

Anyone else had this raised? My local garage mechanic said they have replaced mirrors on several older campers this year.

I can't see how then can make you fit the modern equivalent, if that's the case then owners of classic cars are in deep cr@p as they will not have close to the modern necessities that would need to be fitted now. If the mirrors are the standard fit then argue the point.

If those mirrors are original and on the vehicle from new no one can demand that they be changed as every manufacturer that produces new model of vehicle go through testing in the first instance before they can get the clearance certificate to be sold

Thanks for all the feedback.

Have checked back and they are definitely original fitted equipment. Have given them a good service to ensure they are easy to adjust and position.

Will let you all know what the outcome of the retest is.

If the mirrors are original equipment and still working as originally intended then they can't be deemed to be faulty so can't be considered a 'fail'

Also motor caravans ARE NOT subject to the new regulations regarding mirrors applicable to commercial vehicles.
Another reason why the RSA should have a separate test manual for motor caravans and shouldn't be using commercial vehicle manuals with notes and exemptions.

On some motorhomes the mirrors are fitted a longer arm to allow for the wider body of the motorhome most Motorhomes are built on a stander-ed panel van body and some motorhome builders faill to change the mirror arms. I have not been happy with the mirrors on my camper ACE Novella on a Fiat Ducato and was looking in to change them extend the arms

Finally had the retest this morning and it flew through.

I had to make the point about original equipment to them again though. In this case they are of the extended arm type so really there should not have been an issue. I think it was partially an issue with the adjustability - there were a bit stiff and although I could see perfectly with them the CVRT tester was unable to move them into a position where he could clearly see behind. I had loosened everything, applied a little grease and replaced some washers just to be on the safe side. I was tempted to floor him when he commented that they were a "bit loose"!

Good result. Well done. These are just typical of the inconsistencies that have creep in.
Again, it nice to know that they misqued.
