Leaking Truma C3400 water/blow heater

Hi all,
Just back from hols in wet and windy Scotland and doing our big clean out today. I noticed some damp patches under the water heater (Truma C3400) and one of the flexible air ducts is also damp. Anyone ever experience this problem? Any solutions? Our water has a high iron content - might it have corroded internal parts of the heater? All suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance.

Iron will not corrode, more like block things up, chances are if you have iron in the water you also have hard water (limescale) limescale will start to block pipes when it gets heated, so it may be needing a descale,

I'd make sure there's water in the tank and then turn on the boiler and let it heat too the temperature where knocks off (Amber light goes out) get a flash light and have a good look around, a bit of tissue paper is very handy for finding the wet spot, just be careful not to burn the fingers,

I had the same problem with our van on our second outing, it was leaking where the hoses were joined to a T connection, I tightened all the jubilee clips and this improved the leak but didn't stop it completely, then I cut a small bit off the hoses and reconnect them, tightened the jubilee clips and this solved the problem.

Thanks Mad Max and Chausson for your replies. To update you on the situation: I decided this morning to fire up the boiler and see what would develop. After switching itself off when it reached the set temp the dampness on the base and blower outlets of the boiler had dried up. I've kept an eye on it on and off during the day and thankfully there hasn't been any reappearance of dampness. A theory I now have is that the downpours + winds in Scotland pushed some rain into the cowl and that worked its way down into the boiler base; or is that impossible? I'm relatively new to MHing and have little experience of boilers; any opinions?

In our case there was an odd round plastic manifold [3 or 4 pipes on one side and 1 on the other] which had a hairline crack in it. I'm guessing from residual water during a freezing spell. Couldn't find the source initially but then it got more obvious over time.

I'd move pipes slightly and see does anything appear, put newspaper under it so that you see any fresh drips,

Hopefully it was just the rain, but if it was that needs sorting also,

Am I correct in thinking I should have a cover over the cowl on the side of the MH? I've googled (images) Truma cowl cover and some pics came up but I'm not sure if there is one for C3400.

The cover is only when you're parking up for extended periods. Truma haven't supplied them for years.

How old is your unit?

Hello again viewers,
Just pulled our MH back out last week end and started to get all systems back into action for a few planned trips over Easter. Nasty discovery with the boiler (Truma C3400) - leaking again! Not a nice birthday present. :'( :'( so my theory (previous post) about the rainy storms of Scotland last August driving rain in through the exhaust cowl was incorrect. Again the leak ( drips - not a lot but constant) is coming from the warm air outlet at the very bottom of the boiler.
Any ideas? Is this boiler constructed of aluminium anybody know? If it is then our acidic water could be a factor.

Looking forward to your views.

Joe.

Hi again,
I'm back and sorted! It's a long story but telling it might give encouragement to others in a similar 'hole' as I was. Firstly, a little chat with a supplier of equipment for campers who informed me that a new Truma boiler would be in the region of €2,500 (no folks that's not a typo error!) sent my brain into more than a little melt-down. There was no way I could justify spending that kind of dosh on a 95 camper. So with the time-space of Easter holidays I decided here goes I'm taking the damn contraption out for a darn good investigation. I took the precaution of taking lots of photos and doing a few sketches of wiring connections as I went through the process of removing my darling boiler from the van. In a nice bit of sheltered sun in the back yard I then set to at disassembling the boiler; again with lots of photos at each stage - there's a lot of wiring especially around the PCB that I wouldn't have a chance of memorising for reassembly. On cracking open the boiler ( 2 halves) I found my problem: the boiler walls are aluminium and water had got in behind the sealing paint on the inner walls and corroded the Al resulting in little leaks at the bottom and top seals - water dribbling down into the hot air outlets. Our well water is very acidic so it was eating the Al once it got behind the paint. A guy on another site recommended getting the boiler sand blasted and resprayed with heat resistant paint and this I did - can I recommended a gifted craftsman for the job- Martin Kavanagh, Castledockerell, near Bunclody and only €80 to boot. Over a few evenings I got it all back together with the help of the photos and used a heat resistant, flexible sealer on the joints. Back into the van with it, connected up (get RGI person to check your gas connections) and away she fired but with one little problem - I didn't clean off the heat sensors or wire-wool where they go on the side of the boiler and it wouldn't shut down at the set temp. A tube of Heat conducting paste from PCworld site (€14) and good cleaning of the Al base under them cured that. So as they sent in Kerry 'I'm happy out!' with the outcome even if is to last only for 5 years or so; the van will be nearly heading for it's final repose anyway at that stage.
Hope this speil might give encouragement to other members but it is not a task for anyone with hands only for scratching purposes!!!! - no offence and no boast intended either. Anyone looking for info I'd be glad to help.
Take courage from my long battle.
