We are currently in Wexford and after getting soaked to the skin tried to put on our gas heater. It lit but after a minute it went out. We kept trying and trying and then sudden it gave a bang and there was a burning smell. Any help gratefully accepted or details of someone who could take a look. We were planning on heading to Waterford and Kilkenny next.

I take it that you have the cover off outside, as it sounds like you haven,t

Yes, the cover is off. It is very windy where we are - would that keep blowing it out . Don't want to try it again in case I do more damage!

The wind might well be a factor as it will take a short time for the heater to heat the sensor which keeps the supply on and dampness may be a possibility too.

I have had similar bangs in the past in my caravan days with a carver heater. It was down to the fact that whilst I kept clicking the igniter, it was not sparking and I got a build up of gas which exploded when the spark finally occurred. It was a temporary problem and the heater worked ok after that.

This issue was after a winter lay up and I was getting the van ready for the new season.

You may find that turning the van so that the air intake and exhaust are on the sheltered or lee side to reduce any possibility that the wind was the cause.

Get it checked, it could have blown some of the seals that keep fumes out of the interior.
