Galway area campsites/stopovers

Hi folks. Thinking of heading to Galway for a few days. I have rang Salthill campsite a couple of times but could get no reply, and I haves sent an email. Awaiting response to that. In the meantime I wonder if there are any good stopovers on the way down to there from Dublin. I intend spending a night or two in Lough Ree East. I am not sure if Salthill might be chocabloc as the Galway races might be on?? So I want to have a fallback. I have been looking at the stopovers etc on th forums but has anybody got some quick advice on stops/campsites/marinas etc in the general say, Athlone to Galway area. Portumna is also on my mind for a stopover, but it can be fairly busy.
Regards
Frank

Portumna marina has been relitively quiet on my last couple of visits but that's popping down in the daytime to walk the dogs. There have been campers parking by the library and also in front of the Castle. But as said my visits to town are daytime rather than late and early.

Hi folks just for info. I finally ended up in Salthill campsite, in view of Galway Races inflow. €35 per nite, incl €5 for electrics. I rang to prebook but was told it was not possible. Very curt I felt, but ended up there anyway. Several hard stands available but almost all incoming units were packed up on the grass margin. Not sure if short stay units were not being given available stands. Not worth the money.
Now in Lough Lannagh. €25 incl elects. Very pleasant.
Not sure where to next.
Regards
Frank

I was thinking of taking my 1st outing in our new van next weekend down around Galway & up the coast, Is there anything big on that would make Galway more crowded than usual, such as racing etc??
I plan to use the dock for 1 night (Sat) but if not there Il head on somewhere else...

That's disappointing to hear about Salthill, we are thinking of heading there Tuesday after 2 nights in Doolin.

is there a cycle track from the site direct to the Spanish arch? that was our main attraction with kids we can cycle to town.

anywhere nice around Spiddel or further out?

Taken form there website

There is a now a scenic walkway path open from Salthill Caravan Park, down along the sea front to Blackrock which joins up with the famous Salthill Prom. The fantastic walkway allows you to walk or cycle direct from Salthill Caravan Park into the Spanish Arch and Galway city on a safe path, perfect for those with Children and Prams or for a cycle.

sounds like a good way to have a few beverages in town during the afternoon ;-)
