Hi, we were out yesterday and lost 5th gear, leaving us with just 4 gears, it is Fiat ducato 2.8 idTD (Autotrail Cheyenne 2001) Any one know of any reliable repairs / gearbox specialists etc? (43,000 mileage)
Thank you.

You are not far from Donaghey's who are a Fiat Specialist and with the euro being so weak at the minute you should get a fair price.

Sorry to hear about your gearbox, we used a company in Cullybacky can't remember the name but very good and reasonable prices.
Common fault from what I have read and not too bad to repair.

If you search google for Ducato 5th gear problems it seems to be a very common issue.
The cause of the failures generally being on Motorhomes is being put in to 5th too early. There is a big gap in ratios from 4th to 5th, there is a fiat upgrade available that reduces this. Maybe something worth considering if you have a heavier van?

Hi Dee as Tritan says they are not hard to do but I found that Gardiners can do them nearly as cheap as I could get the parts and I am trade they have done lots of different gearboxs for me and no probs Edd

2nd August and still no joy with 5th gear, seems to be on back order? and hard to get now, we were hoping to get away this month, now all our plans have gone, sitting here with despair now.
One redundant motorhome it now seems. Thanks to all who helped. We are back to square one again :-(

Is the van still ok to run in gears 1-4? Fuel economy may be up slightly but it shouldn't stop you from getting out and about.

yeah for sure , don't let one gear stop you!
If you do get one , it/s a doddle to do , about an hour .

It will run ok with 4 gears, def drinking fuel though. We are a bit afraid of going too far just incase :-(
Think we may have a part at last, just waiting on confirmation now.
Thank you for your help :-)

Hi,
I had the same problem on our Ducato a few years ago, a FIAT garage sorted it out then, only took them half a day.
The 5th Gear is an 'add on' gear unit for the gearbox and as another poster said it is a common enough problem on those engines/gearboxes.
I think it was about €300 at the time but of course your mileage will vary.

Sorry for not replying sooner, it was a company called Gardiners Transmissions in Cullybackey and they did a fantastic same day job, would def recommend them. :D
