West Coast Campsites

Hi all, I'm fairly new to this site and new to motorhoming in general. All my camping expierence so far has consisted of straping a tent and sleeping bag to the carrier on my motorbike and heading to biker rallies. I'm guessing that after buying a Harley Davidson a few years ago and now a motorhome, this is stage 2 of my midlife crisis! Anyhow, due to a change in my wife's circumstances at work, she has to take a week's holiday next week or she won't get the opportunity for another few months. We've decided to make the most of the motorhome and tour down the west coast. We're based in Donegal and intend spending a night on Achill Island. I know Achill well as my Mum is from Achill, and have a planned place to park (I've heard mixed reports on the campsite there). I also found this place online - http://www.wavecrestcamping.com in Kerry. This looks impressive and I like the fact that they have boating activities. Now, the reason behind this post. Does anyone have any other recommendations of campsites, motorhome friendly pubs, or nice places to park up and interesting activities anywhere along the west coast? We don't have any kids or pets traveling with us and would especially be interested in things to see and do. Thanks in advance for any information any of you might have. Also has anyone stayed at Wave Crest in Kerry? What were your expierences of it?

Hi Marty, welcome to the site.

We stay here all the time when in kerry, last year booked in for one night and ended up staying for four Nights.

In our opinion It has every thing they say on their web site.
There is a hotel just a stones throw away from the site, (at least there was last year)

and if your lucky you could spot some dolphins in the bay in evening time. :-) :-)

Here is a link to Campsites http://www.camping-ireland.ie/parks.html

Thanks for that hymer524. Sounds good. To be honest we live on the coast and often see dolphins coming in very close to the shore, but when away on holiday, things like that seem a bit more special. We would be interested in boat or canoe trips to some of the nearby islands. I was just wondering if these are organised trips with a guide.

Thanks for all the info Ally. I couldn't manage to install the Points Of Interest sites onto my Sat Nav. I did manage to get free Campsite P.O.I.s installed when I followed a link from the Garmin site. It's just a pity that I couldn't get the download from this site installed as one of them seemed to have suggested overnight parking. I hope to just access the Usermap from my iphone when away.

I stayed at wavecrest (Caherdaniel) but it was a very long time ago my only complaint (apart from the usual - paying for showers) was that it was very very busy but it was the height of the season.

Was there a problem? an error?

I have put them on four SatNavs now with no problems, so I could maybe try and help?

One of our members "Viktor" uses the TomTom file on his Iphone, maybe he could help you there.

Hi Marty
Ali Donal does sea kayaking out of Westport. Check out http://www.irelandwestseakayaking.com/ for more info. I am experienced paddler and I have paddled with Ali and can say they don't come any better. Also if you are into cycling (even just leisurely) then the Greenway is well worth a trip. Especially the parts from Achill to Mulranny and Mulranny to Newport. If you are not bringing bikes you can hire them in Newport and the guy will pick you up at the end of the day.

If interested in Galway how about a day trip to the Aran Islands? You can get the boat out from Rossaveal Harbour. If staying over in Galway you can legally park on the dock for a few euro from 7pm to 8am. Just make sure you park on the same side as the boats. You can even get electric hook up. Lots of good pubs and restaurants to enjoy and a very short wobble back to the van afterwards.

If into MTB cycling lots of good trial around Galway - Cong, Moycullen, Rosscahill and Derrora (probably spelt that one wrong).

A little further south there is a guy doing sea kayaking trips in North Clare. I think he is called North Clare Sea Kayaking. I know nothing about him but a sea kayaking trip from Doolin to the cliffs of mohar (weather permitting) is class. Nagles camp site is right at the pier in Doolin. Lots of surfing schools in Lahinch if you fell like getting a bit wetter.

Anyway thats just some food for thought. Hope you have a great week.

Thanks for all the info. I was considering a night in Galway but, as I have a sister living there, I have somewhere to park up. The plan so far is Achill, Galway, Kerry and then maybe stopping in Doolin on the journey back home to Donegal. These are rough plans at this stage and we may stay an extra night in any place we really like. Or may even stop along the route or deviate off this course at any stage. I was hoping to try the kayaking at Wave Crest caravan park in Kerry as judging by their website, everything is on site. If, as it seems, from the site and reviews it's as good as it looks, we might spend a couple of nights there. This means enjoying the kayaking without having to move on afterwards.
