Anyone have any experience in refilling propane cylinders with the filling adaptors available on auction sights. i.e can u fill them at lpg stations in Ireland? Not worried about the filling process just wondering if they'll let u fill them at stations even if there in lockers and secured.
Thanks vin

I don't know what the situation is here, but in England the supermarket chain Morrisons banned everyone from filling bottles at their stations.

There are reports that in France and other countries, motorhomes are not allowed to fill unless the tank is permanently installed and the filler point is a fixed, through the wall fitting.

The reason for these actions are people trying to fill standard gas bottles with cheap adapters from the Internet. A refillable cylinder such as those supplied by Gaslow or Gasit, have built in safety valves that stop filling at 80%. ordinary bottles do not, there have been accidents reported on the continent.

You do not make it clear what type of bottle you intend to fill, but the above mentioned firms can supply you with an adaptor for continental countries. I trust you are not going to get motor homing a bad name just to save a few quid.

Welcome to the forum.

I know plenty who fill non refillable domestic bottles, how dangerous it is, the jury is out. It is after all very easy to maintain the 80% max fill from an empty bottle even with a bottle without the safety mechanism. How do they fill them at the depot?

But as Davy said it is not allowed by Calor and the other agents and is forcing some refill places to stop any filling whatsoever, even with the proper bottles.

Let's face it, the proper refillable systems are not that expensive, it would be no time at all until you recouped any money spent and there is even no need for a professional fitment as Gas-It sell it as a DIY kit.

Gas-safe(corgi) members will frown at the above statement but if you can connect a gas bottle up, you can connect a refillable system together, it's only a mater of connecting a few hoses instead of one, which is why it is now considered a DIY kit.

A proper system has so much more convenience as you can fill at any time, usually whilst getting diesel, you don't have to wait until the bottle is empty which you have to do with a non refillable bottle. The safety of a proper bottle obvisouly give's so much more peace of mind also.

At a garage
I dont take trailer load of them like others do
I make sure cylinder is empty and left open at least 24 hrs before fill
I attach adapter to cyl in locker of mh and fill as i would a gaslow etc
6 kg takes 10.5 litres to achieve eighty percent so i only fill to ten litres

I've seen it done at a filling station in NZ where it has to be done locally because otherwise transport costs would make gas too expensive to use. It is done in a well vented shed and the filling apparatus is connected to a set of weighing scales.

The operator sets the weight to be filled and the tare weight of the cylinder from the collar around the neck of the cylinder and the apparatus automatically fills the cylinder to the right weight.

There was also a chart on the wall which stated which types of cylinder could and couldn't be filled at that station.

I have pictures somewhere, I'll try and find them.

It certainly wasn't just a case of hooking the pump up via an adaptor and crossing your fingers.

When i filled fire extinguishers it is checked by weight as well as pressure/capacity
The expansion area is called ullage and is req to make the extinguisher work much like the eighty percent figure on gas cylinders
