hi all, has anyone driven lately (ie since 2011) between Rouen and Orleans via Exreux? I did it in 2011 and there were sections of motorway under construction that would give a good alterate route south when finished whilst bypassing Paris from Calais, however it was quite stop/start and bust a few years ago ? Im planning my route for our trip to costa brava and dont fancy paris peripherique much in MH....suggetsions please

I have over the past ten years made the journey from both Calais and Cherbourg and both avoided and used the periphique. Our preferred route would be Rouen, Evreux, Dreux, Chartres, Orleans to Vierzon. From there you can either head for Chateauroux or Clermont Ferrand. The Chateauroux route is not as hilly and cheaper for the tolls.

I have found through experience that the mileage is similar no matter which way we go (to Spain). If you look at the various routes on Via Michelin you will even find one that takes you via Bordeaux, San Sebastian, Zarragoza etc.

When are you thinking of going?

Cherbourg - Le Mans 195 miles - St Bonnet de Joux + Campagnac 329 miles - Virona - 229miles - Mataro 281 miles.
Brliant site at Mataro with free shuttle to Barcelona centro about 22 miles.
I could hoke out the toll prices if you need them.
Have a brill trip.

hi fat controller,
thanks. we are going 14th July to 14th Aug. How long has it been since you went via evreux as Im trying to find if the roadworks are finished, these will link up the other sections of motorway to make a complete run from rouen to chateauroux. In 2011 it was not a straigtforward run and unless complete I would be tempted to go through peripherique or stay on fast toll roads.

Trying to remember exactly when we went that way and I think it was 2013, last year I took a wrong turn and went via the periphique and boy did I regret that. It added nearly 8 hours onto the journey as the traffic was so bad, but by the time we thought lets go a different way it was too late and had to continue.

The last time I went that way I dont recall any road works on that section, but there were at that time on the A63 south of Bordeaux as they were adding toll boths, but that work is now complete as I have gone and come back that way since then.

If it was me I would go via Rouen and then decide if its Evreux or Le Mans. They will save a lot of time compared to the periphique.

If you look at the routes on google maps and have the traffic indicator turned on it will give you an idea of where you are likely to get held up.

On a side note we are probably going to drive out this summer around that time so we may bump into each other on route to Spain, likewise if we are there and you are passing you are more than welcome to park up for a rest and fill the water etc (and a dip in the pool if its ready)

Thanks controller. I think I will go Rouen Evreux chateauroux after all. Just had a flashback to dragging a caravan with 2 kids under 3 round the peripherique in 2008 :'( . we left Donegal at 11am on the Monday and arrived at bezier(serignan plage) at just after midnight on the weds with 1 driver, Absolute nuts! The whole trip was tiring for sure but enjoyable, except for the Paris bit which I remember at the time saying never again...so yes I'll give it a wide berth. Keep ur eye out for a knaus 705hf with LS plates if ur on the road from mid July till mid Aug. We r headin to sant pere pescador then back via Andorra for some cycling then slow meander up through mid France. Happy truck in!
