GAS Hose

 ·

Time to replace the gas hose going from the yellow Calor bottle to the van. The bottle has one of those push on tops with flip button on top to turn off or on..Pic attached. From investigation I see I need 10.5mm (I think) hose. Low pressure ... A couple of hose clips. Is that it?? is there any sealant etc I need?. Is the job as straight forward as it seems?

Thanks

Just any hardware/builders store and buy a length of rubber gas pipe think its generally called 1/2 inch down here. The pipe might have a best before date stamped on there. Couple of jubilee clips and a screwdriver, your good to go.

Your post just reminded me of something, Don!
When I was replacing a bottle of Propane in our Motorhome I noticed that the previous owner had placed a sheet of rubber on the floor of the gas compartment under the Gas Bottles and had blocked off the vent holes on the floor to allow gas to escape out of the van should the gas hose leak. I urge people to make sure their vents are not blocked with anything the next time they open the gas compartment for safety sake.

Good tip pat,
The previous owner probably had the rubber there to stop the bottle rattling or scraping the floor,

I would think so John, but how many other Motorhome owners got the same brain wave?

is that regulator not a butane one?, if so should Propane not always be used in MH?

Ok back to the drawing board. The Van was propane at one stage as it was imported from france and has propane written on a sticker. Anyhow when I got it it has the regulator on it and the Pipe below and running to the connector as shown. so now I wonder what pipe I need to get !!! Is there special tape needed for around the thread at the connector end? I now see the pipe is well past its best buy as it says change after 2006!!!

You will find that you can have a pipe made up with the female fitting on one end although they generally come with fittings on each end and are know as "LPG Pigtails" that means taking the pipe male from the regulator and fitting each end of the pigtail to each valve rather than the push on and jubilee clip.

Found a pig tail with Female end ...see pic. Do i just cut off the male end then and connect with jublie clip ? If so is there any tape or sealer needed for the threads on female end?

This type of work should not be carried out as a d/ i /y job and should only be carried out by a gas registered tradesman.
Yes anybody can cut a piece of hose and connect it to a cylinder and that is ok untill something goes wrong and then the problems begin.
A few pounds spent with the right tradesman could be money well spent

You might find that you need a tail with the French fitting on the van end. these generally seal using a sealing washer and ptfe tape is not advised. Always get hard fittings checked by a gas fitter.

Saga continues...got rgi guy out ...we initially thought the motorhome was double regulated. So replaced the bottle top regulator with a non regulated connection (and new pipe). Result no gas to appliances. So now the rgi guy reckons it may be a two stage system and we need the regulator on the bottle and the the one on the bulkhead. From other places I am not sure anymore ...at the moment we have nothing as he wants to do some research on it. I attach here some pics and specs (pdf file) on what i think i have. If anyone has advice great....I would be doing this on my own don't worry . I have included a pic of the 758 adaptor on the bulkhead. A pdf spec sheet on it and a pic of the original bottle top connector that came on the motorhome from france.

Just remove all that and fit a new wall mounted reg and pipe. No messing, no worrying, no danger. We sell Gas Low ones, they are very very reliable.

Regulator

 ·

Folks on looking at the pics I am a bit worried. The hose being shown is high pressure hose and that is why the ends are crimped and not a screw on fitting.

Propane leaves the bottle at approx. 9 bars until it gets to the regulator, so needs high pressure hose.
Butane leaves the cylinder at approx 1.1 bar but is immediately reduced by the regulator on top of the bottle.
You cannot operate both Propane and Butane on the one system will not work. If I have picked up the thread correctly you are trying to push butane through its own regulator then the Propane regulator so you will get no gas.
If using Butane you will need to bypass the Propane fixed system on the van.
If you use Butane you can use low pressure hose, and use the worm screw type ends, but u need to bypass the fitted regulator in the van.

Hope I have picked up your problem correctly.
