Installing Reversing Camera

Hi

I want to install a dual reversing camera on my Hymer C46. Photo HERE

I need to run some coax from top RH rear of van internally to cab. How would I bring coax into van and not cause potential leak/dampness.

Thanks

TAYLOR.

If you don't fancy drilling your van you can get a wireless reversing camara, don't know how good they are.

Thanks Ken. The wireless one stills needs power to the camera. The wireless bit is between the camera and the display.

I fitted a wireless one to my last van onto the number plate and used the reversing lights for power.
It was ok. As Tristan said, there was a certain amount of interference. BUT....it was a huge help when reversing.
My current van has a factory fitted camera , roof height at the back, and honestly, i couldnt be without it.

I only ever fit them up high, and cables. And increasingly, connected to a double din stereo.

Thanks Tristan

The one I'm getting is a dual one, 1 lens for reversing and wired to reverse and 2nd is effectively a rear mirror. My van is LHD and filtering right in traffic is very dangerous as I cannot see oncoming traffic.

I would need to route coax through van for both power and signal.

Wondering how to do this properly

Nice system.

Do you have a brake light up high at the back of the camper? I've seen a couple of folks to run the wires in this way. Chances are you'll still need to get creative with a drill and good quality sealant though.

Let us know your impressions of the camera system once you get it fitted and you've used it.

Thanks for this.

No, low level lights. I can manage the wiring as I used to be an electrician once but my only concern is about compromising the waterproofing of cab. I was thinking of glueing a waterproof electrical connection box about 75 or 100mm square to the van body and drilling through the box into the inside and then inserting camers cable through waterproof gland in bottom of box and then into body of van. These work fine in stationary situations but unsure if this would work in a van, especially as I expect body would flex a bit and might break seal.

Any words of wisdom gratefully received.

I always drill a hole in the rear body, and insert the cables through a grommet, then seal around and over with hi quali ty sealer. Never had one leak yet. You'll be running 2 co axs with that system, front to rear. I never fit rear view mirror ones now, the pic is never as nice as a proper screen.

Was just about to advise the same. Regular grommet.

I've used this type of grommet on very thin sheet metal in the past with no issues. Rated to IP67 which is good in terms of water ingress protection.

You need to drill a 12mm hole for each grommet.

Looking at maybe fitting a dual camera like yours when I get the new to me van
How have you got on with it
I guess I am most interested to know how it copes with Sun behind the van and night motorway driving both of which often causes total white out on the screen

Thanks David

Or of course anybody else who have a dual camera love to hear your comments

I hope to take deliver of my replacement van in a couple of days and after spending hours on the internet still cannot decide.
I think I still favour one camera for reversing and one permanent rear view.
This of course brings more decisions (Oh Boy I am c**p at making decisions)
1. Install one of the double cameras high on the roof one looking down and one rearward
2. Install two cameras high on the roof again one looking down and one rearward
3 Install one camera low down for reversing and one other for looking back most likely high

At present I have option 3 which works well except for when the sun is directly behind or at night with headlights behind esp on motorways.

All advice welcome

Also I have read somewhere that there is wireing for a camera behind the high brake light and wondered if anyone can confirm what is actually there and what type of connection.

David

Think best option is dual camera fitted high. Less flaring on lens as both angled down. Also the dual system has one wide angle lens for covering the rear of MH while reversing and one standard lens to give a more normal view which gives a better idea of distance. I have one rear Waeco camera myself which is great for reversing in dry weather but when it rains and the lens gets wet its not so good. Would like to fit a dual system but MH was prewired for single camera and don't fancy running an additional cable. Would love to know what option you go for and what the quality is like when fitted.
