Hi, just failed nct. They said my headlight are not passing beam test. Its a left hand drive 1998 ducato. Can a stick on beam deflector be a fix or do I need new lights? Its passed nct in Ireland past 3 years with same lights.

I know that for cars coming from the continent, the headlights need to be replaced. Left hand drive cars have more or less straight beams unto the road whereas cars in the UK and Ireland have the right hand beam deflected toward the kerb. This is why you need beam deflectors when going to the continent to straighten the beam and cut out that deflection which would be pointing at oncoming drivers.

Unfortunately beam deflectors will not work to create this angled beam which is why headlight units will need to be replaced. They are specially made to UK spec. Once fitted they will also need to have their alignment set properly. It is the one common modification needed if buying a left hand drive car. I would assume that motorhomes would need to comply with the same law regarding light beams.

It also means that if you go back to the continent, you will need to apply beam deflectors.

Assumptions are dangerous things. Properly applied beam benders are accepted in DOE centres throughout Ireland. If the tester refuses, ask to see where it says so in print.

And that's completely inaccurate about LHd European cars not angling the lights. They do. I've set enough lamps on the beam setter to be sure. American lamps afaik don't angle.

Our previous Motorhome, based on LHD Ducato, passed its test everytime with Beam benders, you need the ones for Lhd vehicles ,not the ones you buy here for going to the Continent with RHD vehicles. I got them on ebay Germany if I think correctly.

I've sent vehicles to various test centres around the country this year, on beam benders, with no fails.

If you have upgraded the bulbs since the last tests that could be the problem. some of the modern bulbs don't give the correct beam pattern through old headlamps?

Are you sure Rhd head light are not already fitted? I can't see how it passed test in the past with LHD head lights without Beam benders.

Did you not make that known to them and ask them why they failed it this time?

just in case its relevant to anyone else in the future...I had a call today from the test centre that failed me yesterday that they got a letter today informing them that they can now over ride dip beam fails on LHD vans!! imagine that...
