Just wondering what home internet is available without using a phone line , since the storm last year we are plaged with bad broadband and phone line break down. We don't even use the home phone anymore, so is it possible to get rid of it and get a reliable service without it?

Your only other options are 3G or Satellite.

3G could be costly unless you have an unlimited data plan and Satellite isn't cheap either, it also suffers from bad latency.

You could use a 3G router or Mifi if you got a good data plan.

Tom has Satellite I think so hopefully he can advise better, I know it has came down a lot in price in recent years compared to what it used to be.

Our home connection is with a company that has a mast on top of one of the hills, line of sight is required but no phone line,

At the minute in in work and I have 5 sometimes 6mbps through the phone on 02 network, but I have no phone internet at home,

There's quite a few service providers out there that offer wireless BB but you need to be line of sight and within range of their transmitter tower. We have Ripplecom providing the WIFI in our area and it's pretty good service. Light years ahead of any dialup connection. We're living out in the sticks and we were very fortunate to have a group of neighbours who grouped together and agreed to subscribe if the provided set up a tower in the area... It might be an idea to check if there is anything in your immediate area.

My advice about Satellite is stay well clear of it not fit for purpose. Wireless would be far better by a mile, even my vodafone dongle 3g is far faster with only one bar signal, but less data allowance.

As I have no mobil signal, and no direct line of sight to a mast for wireless and no land line BB, I'm stuck with Satellite for the min.

I'm trying to get the wireless BB company to put a relay mast up, but this would cost a lot of money.

My speed is supposed to be 3.5 meg but nearly all the time it is only about 0.85/0.90 megs.

yes i have contacted them but i may as well bang my head against the wall. 🇧🇭 🇧🇭 it comes down to the satellite been overloaded, solution new Satellite needed so i won't hold my breath. :cense:

Here is a speed test for my BB and it is often worse than this. 🇧🇭

The old saying of Location Location Location used to apply to a number of things - retailing for example, or how much your house was worth.

Nowadays it applies to internet service. Although I live close to a biggish rural town (they used call them market towns) I cannot get any service from the telephone line. That is despite the fact the area has been "fibre enabled" . We are still too far from the "fibre enabled cabinet" to get any service. My daughter lives about 600 meters away from me and gets speeds of 70 to 100mb over the land line.

If you don't fall within the location that gets this you have to use

a) 3G
b) Wireless or line of sight signal from a mast
c) satellite

The only one of those that is not location dependent is satellite.

In our location we have a choice of Digiweb or North West Electronics

I use North West Electronics and have a service that gives "up to" 50mb download, and 10mb upload
It gives about 5mb down and 1.75up

3G might work depending on your location but has limitations as to caps on your downloads volume and also the devices used to limit the number of WiFi connections to 5 devices.

From what I know about satellite I would advise you to forget it unless you have absolutely nothing else.

It is one of the most frustrating services I know. :(

You get a fraction of the speed you were lead to believe you might get
My service continues to slow down because I assume the are still selling it to new customers without upgrading the capacity
The service level is virtually nil ( they never answer the phone)
Talking to the regulator is a waste of time

If I lived near work (15 miles from home) I would just use the phone as it's quicker than my paid BB service,

You could check the different phone coverage of 3G, it may be an answer to your trouble,

Just to be sure to be sure this is the Rural BB Scheme crap. Dial up would be almost as fast as this. 🇧🇭 🇧🇭
