As most of you good folks know I work in the garage, servicing and repairing motorhomes. And most are built on Ducatos. With probably most on the 230/244 chassis, ie the 95-06 type.(95-01 and 02-06 mechanically very similar).

Well... If you left your motorhome to me for a service, and I fitted New brake pads in place of the ones that were less than half worn, and had passed an MOT/DOE recently, would you be a bit surprised and annoyed?

No, there shouldn't!! Friction material separating from the pad. Not on cheap spurious pads , but on oe Fiat ones.


I'm seeing this about once a month now, and tbh it's scary to think how many motorhomes are out there with brake failure a few emergency stops away.

Hence why I always pop out the pads for A look on a service. It only takes a few minutes extra.

You've been warned folks, The DOE/Mot won't pick this up. stay safe!

Oh and btw, that set came out of a medium sized, maxi chassis, with about 25000 miles on the clock....

Cheers folks. I have a scar where I got 10 stitches across the back of my head due to brake failure on a tested van, so you say I'm fussy about brakes...

I have often taken out the pads and part of or all of the friction material fell off onto the ground.

Just to add my experiences I had this problem on mine last year (Mileage about 25k)
Noticed heavy vibration on breaking and when I got home and took them off found that due to improper greasing/service etc. they were sticking on getting very hot and starting to laminate off the plate and the friction pads breaking up in fact the centre section of one pad had gone.
And this was just after the MOT

How many People think when a Vehicle pass's it's Test that it is an indication of safety and Reliability.

Great advice from an expert!

I expect that many workshops won't take the time to inspect properly and a casual look over won't pick this type of defect up.

I have just had new front discs and pads fitted - the existing ones weren't worn out but better safe than sorry with 3500kg GVW to stop in a hurry.

I had my first emergency stop last sunday and jeepers - thought it was not enough room to Woooooah! :( >_<
I hit the bazookah horn and blew their ears out :o

When they are a couple of mm from steel, shoes really only wear at the top edges. More likely to have needed rear wheel cylinder s, very common for them to be weeping or stuck on a drum brakes Ducato.

Many thanks for the tip off Tristan. I'll mention to my local dealer when they are doing the annual checkup which will be in next few weeks. Brakes, tyres, steering linkages and stuff like that are big safety issues. And you can't be too careful :-|

Last year my Volvo S40 went in for the test and failed because the front flexible brake pipes were showing signs of cracking/perishing.
Delighted with the life saving finding I got my garage to order in replacements.

When bleeding the new hoses the mechanic was mystified by the lack of a good pedal returning.

On investigation he found a section of rotten pipe to the rear axle had sprung a leak

I considered myself extremely lucky that this happened in the garage and not on the road.
The car had only covered 40 miles since the test the previous week.
