Anyone use one of those wireless reversing camera's? the ones with a receiver and transmitter, they seem to be very handy in theory but are they up to the job?
Forgive my ignorance, but looking at those you have to drill a hole to fix the camera and get power to the camera from somewhere at the rear of the van, so why not just run a cable on round to the front?
Would one of the number plate based wireless ones not be better as they can have the wiring fitted behind the bumper or where ever?

Why run cable if there is no need too? I have power beside where the camera at the rear would go, which is a lot handier than routing a cable through the van, via cupboards, under cabinets, drilling holes, fixing conduit and trying to hide cable.
That's if they live up to their expectations.
Number plate one might be an idea.

I know what you mean about drilling holes, do you go from the inside to outside or from the outside to inside and having the dexterity of a pack of cookstown sausages knowing my luck it would be too big and I would go through a pipe or power supply

you dont need to drill. I made a stainless bracket and glued to the van, the camera was screwed to the bracket. Then ran power to the reversing light. Yes there ia a bit of cable but it runs along the bar used for bike rack and so can be seen. The wireless receiver bit sits inside and the cable again oes through the reverse light module, so no drilling. Its been working well since 2011 with no problems.

It's not really the fitting I was wondering about but whether the wireless camera's are good, as the wireless beats routing cables through the van. Does the camera receive the picture well? no distortion? good enough picture?

Fitted a wireless set last year taking the power from the reversing lights rear view camera with a clip on mirror screen.

The sender has to be mounted somewhere inside the van but does not have to be in sight of the receiver
I also have a camera wired thro as a permanent rear view I mounted just above the high brake light
IBoth work just great with a clear picture unless the sun is directly behind the van.
Funny thing the first camera example you give is the one I have mounted on the roof and the second on the number plate.
Oh and by the way The smaller numberplate camera (2Nd one) I have had on my car for the last 6 years still working fine.
The Mirror camera was best for me as you can switch between the cameras on the screen
The mounted numberplate light (3rd option) I don't know but I did fit a reversing sensor system like this to my T5 and that worked fine, but it could only be fitted if the numberplate was central

The number plate ones don't give a true perspective, you need a high mounted one. You would' nt mount a security camera on your house at window sill level, would you?
I tried wireless, but went back to fully wired. Running the cable isn't difficult. And it means you can turn on the camera at any time , to check for idiot tailgaters, or that the bikes haven't fallen off, as well as coming on automatically when you engage reverse.

they seem pretty cheap now - when replacing is the wiring the same - new for old ?

Also worth checking to see what the night time performance is like - my wired camera is pretty good at night even with the brake lights on. Like parking sensors on car, you become dependant on them.

The number plate is a bit to low the camera needs to be fitted high up looking down on the area that your backing into gives a better view of the distance between the back of your van and whats behind you if you have a 3rd brake light high up on van most have them there will already be a hole already drilled for the brake light cable. All you will have to do is make the hole bigger and bring the power cable down inside.

Talking of wired ones,
I need to move the wired Camera on the back of our Motorhome to avoid a rear box which is blocking the vision, Is it possible to extend the cable? I cant get access from the inside of the van to see if there is spare cable coiled up. just wondering if there is special cable used and could I solder an extension wire and seal with heath shrink?

almost certain that normal cable would not do as it needs to be a shielded type video cable otherwise the two wires may well interfere with each other.
