Windows 10 to be free

Windows 10 free for all Windows 8.1 and 7 users for first year after release.

Microsoft has just announced the first pricing information for Windows 10 at its preview event today. The biggest news is that the new OS will be completely free for current Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 users for its first year of availability—after that time period has expired, OS upgrades will presumably need to be paid for as they are currently (though Microsoft was less than clear on this point, it made no mention of a paid, Office 365-style subscription for Windows upgrades). The Windows 10 upgrade for Windows Phone 8.1 users will also be free.

"Once a device is upgraded to Windows 10, we'll be keeping it current for the supported lifetime of the device," said Terry Myerson, executive vice president of the Operating Systems Group. "With Windows 10, we think of Windows as a service... The question 'what version are you running' will cease to make sense."

I would think it would be more to do with Android being market leader and free.

I cant seem to be able to justify the cost of a Mac. I only use a laptop for pissing about, and while I realize the Mac is a better product, it would be senseless me buying it. If the price was more user friendly I could cope with learning the alternative ways of the apple and probably enjoy the experience.

I found this posted on another web site, I dont think I will upgrade

Windows 10 will be offered as a free upgrade to users who have bought the OEM software in the past. The cons to this is Microsoft's ploy to invade the privacy of each individual who uses OS 10.

1. “[When you] open a file, we may collect information about the file, the application used to open the file, and how long it takes and use it for purposes such as improving performance”

2. “[When you] enter text, we may collect typed characters and use them for purposes such as improving autocomplete and spellcheck features.”

In short: Microsoft can view your existing files and keylog everything you type when you create new ones. Use Windows 10 and you are agreeing to give access to all your data to the company.

I was a exactly like that aswell, then I was using a Mac in work A few days a week, it did take a bit of getting used to,
Since I bought the mac I don't think I'll be buying a pc again, but that's just my penny's worth,

I bet mark and jack (or any Mac user) probably agree with me though?

No Jack, Apple have lost the market lead (phones) due to Android. Android phones outsell Apple ten fold. Windows phones are now becoming popular but they always held the market lead on PC's.

Apple OS can only be on an Apple device, Android OS can be on any manufacturer's device same with Microsoft OS.

You can put the apple op system in any Intel based pc and run as a dual boot, a few friends of mine did that.

I only have ipad and iPod and use pc's for most things, however I tried the windows 8 and hated it so went back to both version 7 and XP. Looking at the apple stuff I have noticed that they come with a lot of software already installed which if compared to windows pc's isn't on them and to get the Microsoft version legally can cost quite a bit more so overall they work out similarly priced. The big difference is that you can get lower spec'd pc's and laptops which makes it more affordable.

That's true - I should of said they are only sold on their own devices.

Apple is a great OS, so is windows.

The debate here is that Microsoft are copying Apple when the fact is, it is just how things are going, nothing to do with Apple.

Chromebook (android) has outsold windows surface (notebooks), Android is outselling everything as it is available free on every device.

Software developers want you tied in to their OS and everything that encompasses. If Microsoft were to keep on charging for new OS's they would make a stupid mistake. The reason why I am still on windows 7, I only upgrade if I buy a new pc, I wouldn't pay for a new OS.

On a different note, I just hope that technology doesn't steer away from Desktops to much. Tablets are great pieces of kit for doing minimal tasks when out and about, but they are so restrictive they make important tasks practically impossible.

I would love an Apple desktop to see what all the fuss is about but i'll stick with windows, android & other versions of linux as they do everything I need them to do.

If you are loyal to one software or device manufacturer then really you need to get out more :)

Don't understand any of this, but we had Sir Tim Berners-Lee, as a guest speaker at our office meeting yesterday, without him we wouldn't be having this decision 📖
