Rosslare To cherbourg Route Comparison

 ·
Posted: 09.01.2015  ·  #1
hi all, I am considering Rosslare / Cherbourg with Stenaline this year.
I have done all routes direct from Ireland and through UK in the past and last 4 years have gone through chunnel.
How doe this stena service compare against the other operators in terms of service/cleanliness of boat/cabin standard etc??
Also has anyone been able to use Tesco vouchers for any Ireland/france route?
Thanks

I have used it previously under its former name of Celtic Link, it wasnt the biggest boat in the world but adequate, clean and decent food at decent prices. The cabins were clean and comfortable. It was as much as you could ask of a ferry company, how it is now under Stena I cant say but others might be able to shed more light on it.

Like John I haven't been on it since the Stena takeover.

As for Tesco voucher I wouldn't bother as you only have the option to select from the full price or higher prices sailings.

We mainly go to with irish ferries as the boat is more comfortable with better choice of restaurants etc. If you select a peak time sailing with Irish ferries they also offer a free sailing to the UK from Ireland the following year (off peak sailings) for the same occupants in the same vehicle.

To be honest the prices don't have enough of a difference in price between Stena and IF for me (at the times I want to sail) to sail on the Stena boat.

If you are flexible on sailing days you may be surprised at how low the IF sailings can be.
See what I found this year in this thread forum/topic.php?t=7273&page=fs…light=2015

most dont worry about restaurants etc
they base on time of sailing etc
eg the irish ferries time into cherbourg suits more people

i priced both recently and they are within a few quid of each other
if you want to get to france early and get on the road then irish ferries will suit better
otherwise let your money make the choice

Have never travelled with IF/Britanny with camper & dog

Have done France last 3 years with Celticlink & with Stena since the takeover
There always seemed to be a significant difference in price for me with Irish Ferries the more expensive, maybe it was the time of year?

The big thing for us was the expense of bringing the dog 45Euros each way with IF & there was no facility to walk him during the crossing unlike Celtic/Stena which facilitated 2 walks during the voyage when you left him in van as opposed to a kennel.

Tesco Vouchers

 ·

Hi all

We usually go with IF. This year we are booked for Rosslare to Cherbourg. The cabins are tired but clean, restaurants and bars are good, usually entertainment is couple with guitar followed by cabaret. Magician etc for the kids.
The Tesco vouchers are great you have two options.1. pay the standard fare divided by 4 or else if the10% discount is available you can ring and get the discounted fare divided by 4 plus €40.00 charge. You can pay the balance with cash if you need to.
We have done this many times and find it great value.
Looking forward to this years trip!

ROSSLARE TO CHERBOURG

Have travelled on both Irish Ferries and Celtic Link. Irish Ferries were more expensive but had better choice. The Celtic Link boat is smaller limited choice for restaurants however, food was good and well priced. Cabins were good and spotless. Got a great deal pricewise going out for August . Have just booked with Stena for same timespan - surprise, surprise prices have jumped significantly! However saying that they are still cheaper than Irish Ferries.

Competition on the route needs to be re-established

Both Stena and Irish Ferries are a rip off. Celtic link were such good value for money that Stena soon bought out the minnow. Now they once again have the monopoly to share with each other. Bring on Ryan Sea!! 🇧🇭 🇧🇭

We have always gone with Celtic Link and have been very happy. Last year Stena sent us an email the day before we were due to travel back to say the Ferry had been cancelled due to technical difficulties. We ended up being transferred onto Irish Ferries a couple of days later - there were probably only about 5 or 6 cars/vans that had been transferred from Stena and only approx 25-30 vehicles in total - so we assumed that the 'technical difficulties' were just because it wasn't viable to run a ferry, but we could be wrong! Personally I found Irish Ferries cabin very grubby, the ship was extremely noisy (engine noise) and the strong vibration kept me awake all night. Reception area was very plush compared to Stena and yes, there were plenty of eateries to choose from - but as we would spend most of the time in the cabin, it's there where I want to feel comfy. I don't think we would travel with Irish Ferries again. I'm also disappointed but not surprised that Stena have put up the prices. We do seem to be a little hard done to living on this wee island!

Are you only realising that now? We are prisoners here for the ferry companies and they squeeze ever quid out of us to boost their coffers.
