Heading for the ferry in Dublin today, I just noticed an orange warning light with a squiggly M flashing constantly at first, and then intermittently does anyone know what it could be? Although it goes off occasionally it comes back on again. Also i haven't noticed the glow plug light coming on recently when starting the engine, but had put that down to the climate being warm here in Mayo recently, and i have had no problem starting the engine. Could it possibly be an indication that the glow plug has failed? or indeed something else? Unfortunately we are now on the Ferry heading for France ... now where did i put that french phrase book? !!
Any ideas on what i need to do will be very welcome.

Sounds like you need a new glow plug but if the engine starts all right should be ok for a while

My advice would be to drop into a garage when you get to France and if its the glow plug get a new one fitted as you could be left stranded. They are not very costly and simple to fit from what I am told.

They are even available at some of the large Supermarkets in France.

Easy fitted it you have the right sized socket and spanners! But again should be able to get them in a supermarket as they all sell tools as well if you don't have them with you.

More likely to be the heater plug controller relay than the plug itself. I assume you have the single plug on the plenum rather than 4 in the cylinder head?

Tristan - your advice and knowledge in these yokes is awesome and perhaps a photo might assist Pat here showing him where it might be located?

I'd happily post pics if I had one in the yard to point a camera at! Everything here currently is newer. Sorry about that.

Well thanks again for all your replys .... we made it down to Murcia in Spain ok with not a bother ... the warning light whether it be for the relay or indeed the glow plug itself is still flashing now and again ... the engine started every morning on the drive down here even in cold and frosty france. I know i will have to sort it out soon. It is ok starting it here in spain as currently around 18 degrees c in the daytime and around 10 at night. In answer to your question Tristan ... yes it is the single glow plug engine. Would you be able to let me know if the heater plug control relay is easily got and are they expensive?

Just updating on the relay problem, I did discover that the problem was the relay, and when i contacted a fiat dealer in Cartagena i found the part was going to be 300 euro for the relay. It seemed a lot to me, and as it wasn't causing any problems .... we decided to leave it till we got home. However we met a German technician on a site we were staying on ... and he said its easy to fit a manual switch to override the relay and hold it on for four seconds should we ever need a cold start. So we did! in fact he did it for us and all was sorted. However when we had left there and it rained .... the first rain we had in weeks! the wipers didn't work .... I checked the 15 amp fuse it was blown and tried again, it blew immediately again ..... so now we are in the position of being only able to drive when its dry .... obviously something is shorting out and im hoping its not something to do with this relay ... otherwise its back to square one. Has anyone any ideas please?
