Ducato 2.5Tdi starting probs

hi, my new (to me) van has an intermittent (the best type) fault! some times the solenoid clicks for a while then after a few times holding the ignition on it starts. Other times the solenoid doesnt even click. The battery was replaced so I suspect a bad earth somewhere(when turing ignition the headlights come on!!) or a faulty solenoid on starter. Any thing handy to check on solenoid or starter before I leave her in to my mechanic! also would a handsfree kit drain a battery enough to run a battery down after sitting for a few days? A nokia kit is on van but there seems to be power to it even after ive switched off? and im wondering would it take enough power from starter battery to be an issue?

Sounds like the solenoid is on its way out or the battery has not enough power.

If the solenoid fails, get a big spanner and hold it between the points with the ignition on, this will turn and start the engine (shorts it out).

I would try charging the battery as a hands free kit could definitely decharge it enough to make the solenoid just click.

thanks ally, the van has been plugged in since last night so ill try again when I get home. Do you mean put the spanner across the + and 1 contacts on solenoid then get some one to turn it over?

Yes across the contacts.

No, leave ignition on and it will turn over once you short it out. Will scare the crap out of you but it's quite safe, prepare for sparks, make sure no petrol about :)

Van on charge? does yours charge the engine battery as well? mine doesn't.

Disclaimner: if you die or get injured shorting out your solenoid I accept no responsibility.

I used to do it all the time on classic Minis :)

Get the starter off and checked, solenoid is a very very common failure.

If you remove the starter, check the ring gear on the flywheel too.

Ducato starting problem

Hi. Had the same problem with my 2.8 jtdi Ducato. I removed the starter and removed the Solenoid. I sprayed the inside of the solenoid with WD40 and reassembled it. I then cleaned all of the electrical contacts on the solenoid with sandpaper and tightened everything up. Hey presto started first time. Hope this helps.

Best of luck.

Had same problem, was bad connection in ignition switch, handy enough to check, unplug ignition, cross terminals and if turns over and starts, then its switch.
Message me and i will tell u how to start without ignition switch, dont wanna post it here
