1 what type of dish would i need to buy???

Depends how much you want to spend, loads of different types from ones you set up yourself each time you arrive, fully automated ones from around £700 - £2500 or permanently fitted ones that you align yourself upon arrival. A lot are going for the snipe system due to its cost. There is a revie won the snipe here: forum/topic.php?t=7022

2 what channels would or could i receive

All the FTA (free to air) channels, hundreds of them.

3 can i get sky through this tv

Yes but not by using the inbuilt satellite decoder, you would need to add a sky box.

4 Is it worth even adding a dish

I have never been convinced that it is worth it yet. So many other options for TV these days with stremaing etc. But that's a personal choice, I suppose it depends how much you watch tv.

Ally has answered all your questions exactly as I would.

The only thing I would add to point 4 is if you want to watch UK TV in mainland Europe satellite is needed. If you do want to do this the signal footprint has been greatly reduced in the last 12 months. This make it almost impossible to receive UK TV south of Bordeaux with a normal size dish.

I have a snipe system fitted which you are welcome to see working. I am in Donaghadee. Just PM me.

Good point, I don't go to mainland Europe so never think about receiving TV there.

you can get a manual dish for about 500 quid, don't need the expense of a dome which are now about 1300
mark has an excellent alternative too

i use a manual wind up dish and receive satellite all over France but mark raised a very important point, the footprint is smaller now so check where you plan to go and check footprint maps

ps
I got satellite dish for France, used it a few times to check I got signal but realistically the weather is too good to be sitting in van watching tv !!

One thing I would add is that with a satellite dish most people use the main Astra satellite which carries the main channels you would watch at home, but it also allows you to point at others which give alternatives, but they may be in foreign languages.

I have a manual dish which was on the van when I got it and have a tv with built in sat receiver similar to yours, but could count on both hands the number of times I have actually put it up to watch tv in the almost 3 years of owning the van. Just a point to remember is that the system Mark has allows it to be used in most weather conditions, but with a dish system strong winds make me wary of putting it up.

WOW
Thank you thank you so much for your replies yous have certianly give me a lot of food for thought
The only reason i would want to add the dish is for the winter evenings when its dark at 4pm and you tend to spend more time sitting in van.

I had 2 three week trips into europe this year and hardly spent any time in van (trying to keep 2 springer spanials entertained :D ) So not that concerned about france or europe

ps i may take mark up on his kind offer to let me see his snipe system (will be in touch )

Thanks again

Hulio

As Mark says the snipe is a brill piece of kit, small, automatic and finds up to 12 satellites automatically easy to install and it will park itself when you start the engine or when you reach 15mph (according to how its wired). Equivalent to a 650mm dish. I also have one and is well pleased.

For us the answer is simple.
We wild camp or attend rallies a lot in Ireland and use mainly Aires in France. The auto systems are the better choice for our style of motorhoming.

Cheers GandG  = never knew this bit of techno and setting up manually is quite fun :D
Looking lost wandering around sites searching for someone else who has a dish to get a ball park.
Going to install app now :-)

cheers = Hessy is manual and does the job for us

UPDATE: Smaller dish works in Liseaux but not Paris - couldnt get anyting but didnt worry much to be honest

Hi!
I bought a CAMOS Plus from Conrad last year. This is a rectangular manual wind up and align type. It is very compact - folding down flat. We used it as far south as Bordeaux this year and got the usual Astra Free to Air signals. Alignment is critical but with the use of the App "iSatFinder" it was easy enough (With Lidl audio signal finder).

Do not buy from Conrad UK as they charge £499 while Conrad.com charged me €349 less €20 for first time customer and delivery charge was reasonable. (Just checked on internet they now quote €369)

You would need the CAMOS "PLUS" in France as it tilts sideways.

No problem in getting signal in Ireland except, for example, in Ally's where there was a big tree in the way.

If buying a Camos from Conrad.

Camos 1738 Selfsat Top Plus H21D Antenna on Conrad website: €365 = £291 - on Conrad site in sterling for £399 !!
