Renewing brake lines on 95 ducato

Hi all,
I've spent a good deal of time looking up and down the forum topics but cannot find anything on this topic. Our MH is ci Wilk Aventura 565 (anybody else got one?) on a 95 Ducato base and we have no brake problems at all but I had heard of people advising owners to replace brake lines as a precaution in case of corrosion. I'd like to hear peoples' opinions. Is it a DIY possibility? If not, who would you recommend and is there big cost involved?

Looking forward to ideas for out of season ruminating!!!!!!! O-)

Mine is a 93 Hymer based Ducato and it failed the MOT last month on corrosion on the brake pipes. Got the garage to do it as I was worried about bleeding the system afterwards. Was right to be worried as they sheared the bleed nipple on one of the calipers. Done it on a car in the past and if you have all the tools it's not a hugh job.

As Phil says, you need the right tools. You need to splay the end of the pipe to fix it an this requires the proper tool. Not a hard job, but fiddly.

For the price I can get it done here I would get my local mechanic to do it, then if there are problems like sheared nipples (line up the puns) he has the means to fix it.

Get then (properly) checked . Some rust , some don't . I've done hundreds , the ones over and behind the engine are a pain . I replace them with CuproNickel/Kunifer , it'll never rsut again . I REFUSE to use copper.

Thanks guys for your speedy replies. Tristan, any ball-park figure on expected cost if done by your good self? BTW our MH actually made it to this isle through PHM and still has Pat's sticker on the bonnet!

Again my other query - does anyone else have a ci Wilk Aventura MH? It would be interesting to 'compare notes'! Happened on one other owner (selling) in Sligo, on the slopes of Knocknarea. It was a longer version and we felt it was a bit too long for manoeuvring in our yard.

Joe.

My mechanic will only use the nickel also Tristan, he says the burst pressure is so much higher than the copper. With the copper lines in the north, the mot centres seem to fail them every 3rd year for "excessive corrosion and pitting"

Copper is too soft imho . as well as corroding.

OP , tbh , you'd never need to replace EVERY line , but you'd do them all in well under a day. I've never only replaced lines though , any I've done is while servicing , so the front and rear brakes would be stripped and cleaned , adjusted etc , and the rear wheel bearings checked adjusted too , and on a van with rear drums , the wheel cylinders usually need replacing too . I would pull off the brake fluid reservoir and clean the gunk out too , then a full bleed of the whole system.

Thanks Tristan and Chevy,

it's down the road to my mechanic to have a thorough check on the lines next spring when I take take her out of hibernation. The thoughts of what might happen to my dear family on the cliff roads of NE Antrim or Kerry, some fine day, is enough to make me wish I had done it this spring past!!

I'll post you on developments if this thread is left active until next spring.

thanks again for all opinions offered.

Joe. :D

Hi Scottish Danny,
I have a copy of the Wilk Aventura 565 manual in German. I've extracted bits of info from it with the help of Google Translator when the need arose. Is your Wilk also 565 or other? I can post you a copy of the manual if you think it might be of any use.
Joe.
