Can't see if this has been asked before. Does anyone have any idea of how much to allow for daily expenses in France. I know it's the piece of string question, but just looking for a rough idea. Two people, drinkers, good food lovers, etc.eating out costs on average. The usual stuff.cheers. :'(

From the title I thought that's a bit deep for here studying global economics and Francois Holland's attempts to balance the fiscal problems of his stagnant economy.

It really is how longs a piece of string, there are so many variables, how far you travel, what type and style of restaurant how many bottles of wine/pints of beer etc, everyone is different. A Big Mac meal is around €8 if that's any help. I only travel through the country as quick as I can to get to Spain.

We tend not to eat out much, probably due to the fact that we love visiting markets and even the large superU's etc, and tend to buy and assemble or cook meals that way, BUT;

We use aires ( 0-7 euros) extensively together with The France passion scheme (£24 single payment per year) and ACSI discount sites (max18 euro per night) and wild camp. So you can save loads of money to spend on food and drink.

I shall look up my card statement and I noted somewhere how much we spent on sites for 21 nights in June.

If you bear with me I will post info early next week.

Cheers Davy, look forward to that. I like the markets and cooking local products, specially on the BBQ.

Here is a quick breakdown of how much we spent on 24 nights in France in June. It does not include the ferry cost which was about 500euros.

We took 300euro cash, (used about 200) We took 300 euro on the prepay card (spent about 250euro) and the Post Office credit card (commission free) had £1020 clocked up on it.

These costs included all spending on fuel, food, aires and campsites etc, and we brought back over 40 bottles of wine, some of it good wine @ 14euros per bottle but most at 4euros.

Campsite costs were 6 nights on ACSI discount sites 92 euros, 11 nights on aires 39 euros, and 7 nights on France Passion sites, free after 24 euro registration.

Running costs £1300 approx. or £54 per day of which the total campsite costs 131 euros, or approx. 5 euros per night.

We do not have a lavish or extravagant style of holiday. I hope this gives you some help with your planning.

You not not clarify what time of the year you propose travelling so our costs are based on travel outside high season when ferry and site costs are lowest.
Over 6 weeks in France recently (mid Aug - end Sep) we covered 2200 miles. Fuel costs came to just under €500 (approx .23 cent per mile. Av cost per Litre €1.25 in commercial centres). 36 nights in sites using ACSI rates (out of high season) averaged €18.50 p.n. As pointed out above, other costs depend on yourselves. We mixed eating out with cooking in. Best value if eating out are the restaurant specials at midday. More expensive if eating out in evenings. SWMBO reckons food/drink overall average about €40 per day. Of course credit card melted after tour costs, visits to historical places etc, clothes purchases, shoe purchases, wines etc purchases which costs are personal to each motorhomer. Ferry cost around €430. Gas refill €30, Dining on Ferry €140 (special treat to ourselves on starting and finishing holidays in Irish Ferries fabulous restaurant!!!) Using inexpensive local transport another €40. Then you may need to factor in toll costs if on motorways and breakdown insurance (ADAC??)

Hope the fuel and sites costs give you some idea. Site costs of course can be reduced or eliminated through using Aires and wild parking. If you need Wifi some sites charge ridiculous rates while others are all in. There is always McDonalds for free Wifi!!
Do your budgeting and have a ball. Happy motorhoming.

You have been given loads of info to help plan your trip already but I just discovered our notes from summer 2014

Remember to take into account that the sailing will have been paid for before you travel.
We covered 2200 miles (Cherbourg to south coast) using about €500 of fuel but of course you don't need to go that far and avoid a lot of that cost.
We chose to use toll roads at a total coast of €150 but again you can avoid these costs.

We stayed on Aires for 21 nights at a total cost of €102.50. (Some were free) campsites will be more.

We spent a total of €1900 including the above costs.

That's about €1150 for everything else.

We eat out if we feel like it and shop for what we want. Prices for both are slightly less than at home.
My wife does have a habit of buying shoes and stuff for the house when we are in France some that is something you may not have to worry about. LOL

It is a little hard to give a per day rate but the following observations might help.

Food? We cook mostly and eat at restaurants occasionally whether we are at home or in France. So our food bill is slightly less in France (compared to Rep of Irl)

Drinks? The cost per bottle of wine in France is lower but we do tend to drink a bit more in France than we do at home - something to do with getting into the culture. :D

Diesel? When we were there earlier this year I recall diesel could be bought at supermarket pumps for as low as €1.29 whilst in Irl we were paying over €1.50 so €0.20 to €0.25 per litre saving. France is a big country and you can rack up a lot of miles

Tolls? Very expensive and there are lots of them - This site (http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/ ) can act as a route planner for you but will also show toll costs (it is approx because there isn't an option for a motorhome for type of vehicle)

Obviously you can control cost of tolls and diesel by driving more or less and during this kind of holiday don't be tempted to spend your holiday driving.

Campsites are a biggie - but even they depend on the time of year you go there. Once upon a time we used go in high summer when our children were small and we could only get our time off during peak holiday time. Now we never go in July or August.

In 2014 the ACSI sites ranged from €12 to €16 per night and that usually included electricity. Even non ACSI sites in the non-peak season offered roughly similar rates. Sites close to popular destinations tended to be more and you can pay €20 to €30 per night. A good alternative are the aires and there are loads of them ranging from free to a few euro per night. You can also wild camp - just use common sense. Over the course of the holiday a mix of camping sites and aires and wild camping will keep the costs down. Some people as a matter of principle never go to camp sites! If you do long stays on one campsite ask if they have deals. Some owners will give a good discount less than ACSI rates if you stay with them for two or three weeks - or longer

Aside from that you may spend on paying into various tourist attractions.

Phone calls - only family and we text our family to call us.

The only other item we spend a little money on is we rent a small car from time to time if there is an area we would like to explore more fully but don't want the hassle of driving the MH around.

Lastly - as with all foreign travel - it is advisable to have credit card which might get you out of an emergency eg. if you had a breakdown

Trust me. You will love France. And you will also love Spain and Italy too.
