Motorhomes banned from Dover seafront

AN OVERNIGHT ban is set to be enforced to prevent caravans from parking along Dover seafront.

A council report states the measure is in response to "concerns raised by residents and businesses" such as those featured on the Express' front page last month.

The ban would be enforced from 6pm to 6am seven days a week on caravans parking on Marine Parade and Waterloo Crescent.

The recommendation will be discussed at a Joint Transportation Board meeting in Whitfield tonight (Thursday) at 6pm.

But Gateway resident Robert Knibbs thinks the proposal is "a step forward but not ideal".

This quote from the article by a local resident, who it has to be said has taken a reasonable stance on the issue, sums it up for me

"People have been using the garden areas as toilets, defecating in the entrance area, leaving black bin bags of litter in the street and playing loud music at night.

"It is quite understandable because these people are on their holidays – but they need somewhere more appropriate to do it. The council should find a parcel of land, put wash and electric facilities in place and charge them a fee. They could make good money out of it."

Once again an example of certain Motorhomers ruining the reputation of us all

Having used Marine Parade I can say I understand the locals feelings, but the night I stayed there the most noise came from the pub at the end of the road at chucking out time and it was locals shouting abuse at the motorhomers, who although counted approx 20 vans were all tucked up and asleep as they were either getting an early boat or coming off an late boat. I for one did not leave anything behind and was away before 9am as you have to pay after that and I had a boat to catch in Holyhead later that afternoon. The local council were around at about 7am lifting rubbish from the promenade which looked a lot like discarded take away wrappers, again possibly from the locals leaving the pub.

But thats not to say some have behaved in an abhorrent manner and have (along with undesirable locals) gotten everyone tarred with the same brush and lost a valuable parking spot.
