Pileus cloud above the Sarychev volcano as it erupts, Kuril Islands, Russia. Pileus clouds, also called scarf or cap clouds, are small clouds that form on top of a bigger cloud. In this photo a pileus cloud (centre) has formed above a cloud of volcanic ash from the Sarychev volcano. A large plume of smoke, steam and ash is erupting from the volcano while pyroclastic flow of denser ash descends the volcano sides. The picture was taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station. ...

A volcano in central Japan has erupted, sending ash clouds and debris down the mountains’ slope for more than 3 kilometers. At least eight people have been injured and aircraft have been forced to divert to avoid the dangerous area.

The Ontake volcano on the border of Nagano and Gifu prefectures, 200 kilometers west of Tokyo, started erupting at about 11:53 local time (02:53 GMT), NHK reported, citing Japan’s Meteorological Agency. NHK released a video showing the volcano spewing thick, gray smoke into the air. “Seven people were slightly injured and one person suffered serious injuries as a result of the eruption,” Makoto Hasegawa of the Nagano prefecture fire department told Reuters.

“Airplanes are diverting their flying routes to avoid the ash cloud,“ he added.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency declared a level 3 volcano alert on a 1 to 5 scale, which means people are advised to stay away from the mountain. The agency warned that the debris from the volcano could fall as far as 4 kilometers away.

Channel News Asia cited an official of the Nagano prefecture fire department as saying that the casualty numbers may rise as new reports arrive.

Kelimutu crater lakes

Kelimutu ([kəliˈmutu]) is a volcano, close to the small town of Moni in central Flores island in Indonesia. The volcano is around 50km to the east of Ende, Indonesia, the capital of Ende regency in East Nusa Tenggara province.

The volcano contains three striking summit crater lakes of varying colors. Tiwu Ata Bupu (Lake of Old People) is usually blue and is the westernmost of the three lakes. The other two lakes, Tiwu Ko'o Fai Nuwa Muri (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake) are separated by a shared crater wall and are typically green or red respectively. The lake colors vary on a periodic basis. Subaqueous fumaroles are the probable cause of active upwelling that occurs at the two eastern lakes.

The lakes have been a source of minor phreatic eruptions in historical time. The summit of the compound 1639-m-high Kelimutu volcano is elongated two km in a WNW-ESE direction; the older cones of Kelido and Kelibara are located respectively three km to the north and two km to the south. The scenic lakes are a popular tourist destination.

Kelimutu is also of interest to geologists because the three lakes have different colors yet are at the crest of the same volcano. According to the local officer at Kelimutu National Park, the colour changes as a result of chemical reactions resulting from the minerals contained in the lake perhaps triggered by volcano gas activity. Kawah Putih lake in West Java, south of Bandung, is another crater lake in Indonesia with some similarities to the lakes at Kelimutu.

Moraine Lake, Canada
Is a precious jewel of nature, and simply breathtaking.
The small glacial lake is located at an altitude of 1884 meters, and its shores quick mountains pointing to the sky above 3000 meters looking for the sun first, that only in the late morning will come to caress the lake itself. The opaque deep blue along with thick forests that have never known the ax, giving a mystical aura to Moraine Lake. And 'spontaneous feel a renewed rise club, a deep peace, standing on the shore in silence to observe the birth of a new day.

Mount Batur (Gunung Batur) is an active volcano located at the center of two concentric calderas north west of Mount Agung, Bali, Indonesia. The south east side of the larger 10×13 km caldera contains a caldera lake. The inner 7.5-kilometer-wide caldera, which was formed during emplacement of the Bali (or Ubud) ignimbrite, has been dated at about 23,670 and 28,500 years ago.

Háifoss Waterfall, Iceland

The waterfall Háifoss is situated near the volcano Hekla in the south of Iceland. The river Fossá, a tributary of Þjórsá, drops here from a height of 122 m. This is the second highest waterfall of the island.

From the historical farm Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption of Hekla in the Middle Ages and reconstructed, it is possible to hike to the waterfall along the Fossá (5 to 6 hours both directions). Above the waterfall, there is also a parking lot, so the hiking can also be made in the other direction.

Grosse Scheidegg
You are walking and walking, it goes upwards from curve to curve and when you think it will never end, then you reach the top and you will rewarded with this amazing view.
I was already late, because of the weather, the sky was completely covered with clouds until 4 o'clock and then, while I was driving to my starting point, my car stuck in the snow mud, the snow chains where a hell for mounting, then they cracked after I started and and the end I couldn't unmount it for a whole while.
But after all I reached the Scharzwaldalp, the last point you can drive to with your car and started my nightly hike to get dreamy winter wonderland images. First it comes the work and I had to walk over 500m altitude difference up to the Scheidegg. I reached the top after about 2.5h. First I saw some huts and then I could peek over the ridge down to the Grindelwald valley.
And what a stunning view does it present to me, all the sparkling snow, bright and white illuminated by the moon. Down in the valley the lights of the village and at the slopes the lights of all the snowcats and overall the blue sky with all the sparkling stars.

On this day 103 years ago, April 15th 1912, the Titanic sank with the loss of some 1,500 souls.

This rickety pier in Cobh, County Cork, once served as the White Star Pier, and was the final boarding point for 123 passengers who boarded the ship at Cobh (known as Queenstown at the time), before setting off on their tragically ill-fated journey.

Several passengers disembarked at Cobh, including Father Frank Browne, who was training to be a Jesuit priest, he took the now famous final photographs of the doomed ship as it left Cobh harbour.
The pier is in a very precarious state of preservation, we can only hope that steps are taken to preserve this important piece of Cobh's heritage.

Father Frank Browne the guy who took the last photos had been offered a ticket from some rich people on board but his uncle then the bishop told him they had too much to do in Cobh and he stayed. Lucky him! In fact if you are ever in Cobh check out the fabulous cathedral.
The jetty is part of the tour and you see it from the actual building that was used by the white star company those who went to steerage did not actually go through the building. It is in disrepair however they are trying to keep it as authentic as possible.

This popular group is famous as the Leo Triplet - a gathering of three magnificent galaxies in one field of view. Crowd pleasers when imaged with even modest telescopes, they can be introduced individually as NGC 3628 (left), M66 (bottom right), and M65 (top). All three are large spiral galaxies but they tend to look dissimilar because their galactic disks are tilted at different angles to our line of sight. NGC 3628 is seen edge-on, with obscuring dust lanes cutting across the plane of the galaxy, while the disks of M66 and M65 are both inclined enough to show off their spiral structure. Gravitational interactions between galaxies in the group have also left telltale signs, including the warped and inflated disk of NGC 3628 and the drawn out spiral arms of M66. This gorgeous view of the region spans about one degree (two full moons) on the sky. The field covers over 500 thousand light-years at the trio's estimated distance of 30 million light-years.
