Newbie introduction

Hi, just signed-up after meeting another happy camper in Ardmore. Didn't know this site existed, so delighted to be here.
We've been motor-homing for 8 years now, but always used 'proper' camp-sites.
We then discovered 'Safe Nights Ireland' ....and indirectly from that discovery, we've found a whole new world of affordable trips. Only three non-campsite breaks so far, but each time in great locations...meeting some great people and enjoying a much more easy-going attitude.
We can now look forward to more trips and less expense, and to this end we'd be hoping to draw up a list of possible sites to stay at next season. We're based in West Cork BTW.
My only concern is that, without hook-up, we'll have to watch our power consumption. We have a 12v/240v inverter for the TV, as well as the usual lighting etc., and for the first time in 8 years, we experienced the leisure battery running low after 2 days. Shock horror!
We have a Maplins solar panel, great for trickle charging but not quick boosting. LED lights and a bigger panel would be above our budget, so maybe a second leisure battery would be the answer? Advice appreciated, including how to fit etc. Max stays anywhwere would be 3 nights, more often 2.
Thanks in advance for responses, looking out of the window this morning, we certainly picked the right days to visit Ardmore! It's a delightful place BTW.

Hi Tony. Welcome to the Craic.

A second leisure battery would be an improvement but it is better to get two new ones at the same time. I believe the reason for this is two batteries of different ages will only work to the capacity of the worst performing one.

So, if your current battery is already a few years old and is used to being on hook up a lot of the time if may not be at its best.

I think I have got this right but I am sure others on here will have an answer in more detail.

Welcome to the Craic,Tony!

I agree with Mark regarding using an old and new battery, I learned it the hard way, I tried that and the new one lasted no length and I had to replace the two of them together.

leisure battery

Thanks for the welcome and the responses. As far as the second leisure battery goes, I should point out that the present battery is working fine...it's less than five years old and reading 12.5 volts when 'off-duty'. It wouldn't make sense to me to discard it and buy TWO new batteries....one would be expensive enough!

I would still suggest getting two.
A five your old battery can't be performing as well as a new one.

It may have 12 volt charge but less storage capacity. The real test is how long it can provide you with a 12 volt supply while supplying power to something.
Another thing I believe is important is the length of the lead between them.
