Charging/al-Ko carrier

Hi to all craicers, was wondering how often I need to hook up the van to mains to give the batteries a charge. Usually didn't bother me as the van was always on the go somewhere and we don't use tv or inverters so batteries are topped up. Due to circumstances the van is only now used once a fortnight or so and only for a 20/50 kilometre run. Would 24 hours be enough every week or so?.
Am planning to get a solar panel fitted hopefully early next year to help.
Plus........has anybody got/seen/or heard anything about the Sawiko carrier from Al-Ko as advertised on the MMM magazine. I'm caught for space in my shed and the present carrier has to come off each time I put the van in, which is all the time. This carrier looks ideal as I am concerned about some bubbling around the fastening plates on the van.

When you park up for a while check that you do not leave something switched on that will be a draw on the batteries. Things that I have accidently left swiched on in the past were:

-the radio when I had the volume turned completely down
-the little booster unit for the TV aerial ( tucked away out of site in the wardrobe)
- a light - especially the one in the garage compartment

If everything is turned off with no draw your batteries would probably last for 3 or 4 weeks (longer even) before any appreciable discharge takes place

I check mine at least once per week and there is a gauge over the habitation door which tells me the state of charge of both batteries.

It is NOT GOOD to completely discharge one or other of the batteries

Happy camping :)

PS never heard of the Sawiko!

It's a type of bike carrier that is placed on the chassis rail of the van,it eliminates carrying bikes on the body of the van. Can be recessed back into the chassis when not in use and looks just like the original bumper. Alko.......the people who make the extended chassis for fiat etc are making them.

I have a towbar mounted bike rack you take off when not needed.
Works fine and prob a lot cheaper
