Hi all, we are new to campervans, I have read a lot about wild camping and love the sound of it,
Was thinking to head up to omey island this weekend for a night, we went there as kids(stayed in b&b) and would like to show my 8 & 5 year old.

Where is ok to stop over ?

Thanks Sean from killmac ..

I'm sure others from that part of the island will be able to let you know, but if the carpark or where ever has no height barriers then probably not a problem. Just remember to leave it as you find it, take all rubbish home along with memories of a good time.

Hi Sean, was in this area over the weekend and stayed in Leenane, and Westport Harbour, previously stayed in Roundstone
both in car parks.
There is a car park at Omey Island on the mainland side which is big enough to stay at and would say you'd have no bother
at all wildcamping here.Killary Cruises has a large carpark and boat trips leave at 10:30am/12:30 good trip for the kids
Assleagh Falls nearby also nice spot.Good Luck You should get a feel for a place when Wildcamping
If it's a good one Stay thnx Barry

Hi Sean
We visit Omey regularly. It's a great spot. Our kids love the beaches and exploring the rocks and dunes. You can overnight at the Claddaghduff car park or you can drive out onto the island itself. Basically, drive out to where the road ends and you will find plenty of place to park. But, as you may recall the road itself is quite narrow.

The causeway is tidal and generally it is clear to cross from half tide to half tide (that is half out to half way back in). If it is a low tide you may have a longer window.

We could even end up there Saturday night ourselves.

The carpark at Omey Island is a safe place to wildcamp ,personely i would not cross over to the island in the van ,the sand gets into everything ,there is a graveyard on the island with some very unusual names on the headstones and the beach is safe for the kids

Welcome to Motorhomecraic and thanks for subscribing.

It is ok to BBQ usually but if it doesn't feel right don't. No BBQ'ing at Aires or obviously outside business's that sell drink or food :)
