Anyone have experience of Dundonald campsite, Belfast?

We're long-terming in our van and, due to family commitments, we'll be over-wintering in Ireland, North and South.

Prior to returning home we thought we'd sussed a reasonable solution to our accommodation for part of the time anyway - staying on the Dundonald campsite which turns into an aire at the beginning of November, providing pitch and electricity for 8€ a night.

However, our offspring are dead against it, each having experience of family or friend being the subject of, shall we say, anti-social behaviour. None of the incidents was in the campsite itself and it seems to me that the site is pretty much sheltered from the surrounding area and it's behind locked gates.

However, if anything happened, they'd likely be picking up the pieces and they've enough on their plates.

Does anyone have any experience of staying on the site, or know anyone who has? Especially over winter?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jean,

You don't give your location so i presume you have a southern reg van.I stayed 1 night last Dec with a southern van,we were the only van there,as you say it is very secure and cant be seen from the road,I found the staff very friendly and helpful,i had been warned by some friends that live in Belfast to stay away from the area, but we had no trouble.

I lived and worked in the Dundonald area for many years. It is a safe area of Belfast.
It only gets a bad name due to a housing estate which is not that close to the campsite.

Why not stay at Shanogue which is ideal for what you are looking for?

Thanks folks for the input.

Taylor, our van is registered in the north. Your experience sounds positive so that's encouraging.

Hillton, yes we do have to be based in Belfast, preferably East Belfast, due to an impending grandchild! Shanogue would be a bit too far to be useful in the early days but it's good to know about for a wee break from duties!

Again, thanks for the help. :-)

Hi, we were in there for one night last month. The staff were great and couln't do enough for us, even to the point of opening up sewage man hole lid so we could dump tanks!
Faciities are all ok, and shops were a good walk away. There is a degree of road noise as you're fairly close by to passing traffic When we were there there was 5 other vans/tents and felt fine. Would I be happy long term there on my own in the winter - not sure

Thanks again folks.

Fat Controller - the problem with Jordanstown for long-terming is they don't do reduced rates in the winter - they're also further afield than we'd prefer to be.

Bobs - yes, "Would I be happy long term there on my own in the winter - not sure" - the $64,000 question......

Jiwawa,

I have stayed on this site a number of times. The site is very secure so you've no worries there, on a few occasions we stayed during the marching season and I must say that we felt a little unsettled, this was more due to the "colourful" appearance of the area and on one occasion a very loud parade going by. However, I would have no hesitation staying again, there are good bus routes into the city centre and as I say the site itself is as safe as a fortress.
