No..

I was there on Sunday and was told it wasn't working.
It was our first visit and I was really surprised to see how nice the aire was. No photos I have ever seen do it any justice.
This will be rectified soon...

The Aires in Broughshane was installed in June 2003 and was the first outside mainland Europe, it is on private ground owned by the village and was paid for by the village with no council input, only recently a small cost of £5 per night was introduced to help pay for the maintaince, a new token unit was fitted recently and new tokens were needed as well and like everywhere else at the minute ,funds are in short supply I felt it important that users understand that so we can continue with the roll out of Aires, much has been done recently and hugh progress has been made, once planning is completed the one in Donaghadee should be installed. there is others coming as well,I cannot stress how important it is that we all play our part unfortunatly there are always some who by by splitting the electric, refusing to pay even the small charge etc, set back what we have been working on for the last 11 years.
The Aire in Broughshane has been a hugh success and the Village do appreciate the motorhomes coming, the residents of the Fold that overlooks the Aires enjoy seeing all the travellers from all over the world coming to the village, and we hope it will continue, because without this Village taking the step into the unknown and spending close to £8000 as well, Aires outside of mainland Europe would still be a long way off.
I was unaware that the unit was off but I have already contacted the maintaince electrician to call tomorrow to check it out.Willie

£5 and £1 or £2? for electric for 10 hours, not a lot to pay for a nights stay compared to Camp sites, I think it's very reasonable. Especially considering most Aires here are £1 for an hour of electric (if I have my figures right).

Thanks Willie. That answers the £5 question.

Good to hear you have a contact to inform as I was going to suggest it to a few friends until I heard it wasn't working.

I had a look at Donaghadee the other evening. The unit is in place behind site fencing, but the access/parking bays are not complete. It was dark but it looks as if it will accommodate 2 mhs

No such thing. Oh hang on a minute......

If I put in a £2 token for 10 hours of electric, can you take the lead out say in 5 hours then carry on later for the other 5 hours? or is that really a stupid question? :D

Your electric supply will run for 10hrs from the time you insert your token, so if you insert your token at 12 noon your supply will run out at 10 pm on that day regardless of whether or not you are using it.

Broughshane Aires

 ·

Anyone any ideas how to help keep the Aires in Broughshane as many Motorhome users think it is OK to not pay the nominal fee of £5, this gives the Village a slight return for their investment, and when others interested in establishing an Aires shows that it is self sustainable, it is very important. Remeber this Aires is on private property owned by the Village, how would you like it if someone just parked up in your yard and stayed overnight and just took off again. The Village want to keep it informal a casual like it is now, but the number of Vans not paying is causing annoyance in the Village. One motorhomer even hiding in the motorhome to avoid paying when they went round the vans ,sadly these people also class themselves a good motorhomers,
Suggestions anyone?

Yes. Get better advice when setting up an Aire.
Use the same system many French villages do. A credit card pay barrier on entry. It costs a lot to set up but then it cost a lot to place 3 bornes and 3 useless drive over drains (which cannot be driven over) for 6 Motorhome spaces like Portglenone.

Once again poor advice given.

I brought this up a couple of years on MHcraic after I received some complaints from the woman who takes the money, sorry cant remember her name. I was laughingly called a tout by a couple of people.

I think change it to the same system as Donaghadee, a token for an hour of electric, is that not the way most Aires are anyhow? Instead of the 10 hours of electric that it is now, I know another complaint of hers was the fact that some were using it in the winter for days on end as it's a cheap way to live!

I am not sure how you would make someone pay the £5, a barrier as Mark suggested but that's more money that I doubt locals would wish to spend.

The only other option I can think of is pay & display and a fine for not doing so but of course that needs policed.

There is a problem.

Nowhere to pay between 12:30 Friday and 9:00 Monday.
I would imagine that is the busy period.

pay in the thatch any time the bar is open

I sometimes don't pay until sat or even sunday if I'm not down the village for something

I use it very regularly and I would say 99 percent of mhomers pay,

be careful of yet again going of on a tangent about this is happening that's happening etc, you will find many people with complaints probably haven't used the service they have heard complaints about.

broughshane is prob one of the most switched on community groups I know and I'm sure if it was not breaking even on ehu or overnight fees they would take action

if I'm there and going to the thatch to pay or down the village I ask the other mhomers there if they want me to get them tokens or take their payment in for them, that is a discreet way of making the effort to support the aire

Thanks guys,Bobs idea has merit, and is probably the best option we all need to take ownership as it is in Motorhome users interest, and was created for all motorhomers, restrictive access is not any use here, and does spoil the concept of turning up any time 24/7. there is an issue and all I am asking is be aware of it, can you imagine if another Village considering an Aires thinks there will be an issue they will walk away, the garden centre for the village where they grow all the flowers is in past the Aires and they know how many are parked up, it is dot difficult to see how many have paid compared to how many stopped over! When there is a village meeting we do not want negative comments documented in the minutes, its too late then.

it helps meeting people too, I have had mhomers call at my van to see if I wanted tokens or payment taken to the thatch as they were heading in.
I thought it was a very apt thing to offer, you make acquaintances, the aire gets its money, and an offer of coffee sometime over the weekend....

win win for all

enjoy your motorhomes and if I am about its coffee no sugar......ta

Pay and Display the receipt on the dash/window and if you do that it may prompt others to do the same and maybe someone doing odd spot checks to encourage the non payers :(

Plug van to lecky or not if you stay on an Aires and there is a charge then it should be paid, these facilities cost a lot of money to set up and maintain.
The people who think that everything should be free once you purchase a Motorhome are doing a great disservice to the Motorhome community .
Why are Motorhomers not being made welcome at some locations? because of the abuse of others who feel once you own a Motorhome all other expenses should be covered by someone else.

Absolutely, and there a re a hell of a lot of them out there, you don't have to pass this Site, How many join this site and aren't prepared to pay £12.50 for twelve months information and entertainment. Instead they log on with questions that have been answered over and over again and if they subscribed all that information is there with a simple search.

There is no point painting ourselves whiter than white, we aren't and we need to change our attitude and pull our weight too.

Rant over, I feel much better now :D

Re ensuring people pay.
I stayed in a place in Spain which had pop up individual barriers to park you needed to get a key, to get they key you had to go the local coffee shop or bar and pay the amount to get the key to open the barrier, as most people arrived when the bar coffee shop was open no problem, deposit taken for the key.

Another option is a key code simplex lock so that is people want to enter the space they could phone a number (times specified) and the code would be given over the phone subject to collection of the fee arrangements made.

Both require additional expenses but probably cheaper than a barrier and less maintenance fees/issues.

Shame you have to consider resorting to this as its a great service the village is offering.

I seen people staying on an aire which has an additional charge for electric un hooking at the time the collector was due to visit and plugging in after the collector had left, to mind this is theft pure and simple. We all like good value and as cheap as possible but lets not ruin it by taking the p*ss.
