Hello

I have just this minute become a member, more on behalf of my husband than myself, but he's not very computer savvy.
He is in the process of converting his second Transit van to a camper. The first was a rusty, very old van,but now we have a much newer, smarter one.OH uses it mainly for Folk Music Festivals, but I have been with him a couple of times.
We are making our first visit to Ireland in it at the end of the month, and I have been amazed at the number of camp sites that do not accept Transit vans, and so far have not been able to book for a single night.Looks like we might have to do a spot of wild camping, but not being an expert I'm not very confident. We will be in Omagh for 3 nights, then 2 nights not sure where, and night 6 near Larne for early morning ferry, all suggestions very welcome, many thanks.

Welcome to Motorhomecraic.

Can you not book it into the campsite as a campervan and not a transit van?

If it's a campervan I don't see why there would be any issue. Plenty of transits as campervans and Motorhomes here.

As a new campsite owner and new to Ireland, (probably no where near where you intend to stay) I was warned by several not to allow commercial vans on site for fear of travellers. But I simply meet all that arrive and if I got a bad feeling about the person or group I would reserve my right to ask them to leave. I would not turn away all commercial vehicles because a large number of camping cars from mainland Europe are vans that have been converted either to a very high spec or just the basics such as having a bed in the back.

So I would book as as a motorhome and if the owner then refuses well you probably would not have enjoyed the campsite anyway.
Good luck.

I don't see why it is an issue at all,but it seems to be to some site owners, especially council owned ones. Our van doesn't have side windows, just a large skylight,so still looks like a Transit.

Because a lot of travellers tow caravans with transits, so they just ban them to avoid confrontation.

Hi Marlene, I presume that you may be coming to Omagh for the bluegrass festival early September, we only have one local campsite where I can speak to the owner on your behalf.
If you are stuck i could perhaps sort somewhere out with friends, unfortunately my driveway isn't that level.

Put a few graphics on it or maybe a bike rack and it will transform it into a camper!

We are at the Bluegrass Festival and hopefully able to camp at the rugby club in Omagh,it's the couple of days after that we will need to find somewhere as we travel around.I'm sure we will be OK,thanks for all the suggestions.

I do hope you get a friendly and warm reception when you get here. I bet if you turn up to a camp site they will not turn you away. We see all sorts at sites. Best of luck.
