Midges

Well after being eaten alive by Midges on the Mourne Mountains a week or more ago ( I blame Digger, for the parking area but don't tell him) I need a repellent!

A lot seem to swear by the "Avon Skin So Soft dry oil spray" and it seems to be used by the British Army although not issued.

Some say it's a placebo and some say it's amazing. Gong to order some of fleabay, 3 bottles for a tenner according to Paul.

MH Fly screens are hopeless at keeping them out, but I hear some spray them with fly killer?

I use So Soft out on the golf course and it works for me - or at least the little blighters don't have a go at me as often. Don't know i I would agree with the dry oil statement though! Another one is Smidge that is supposed to work well. They also produce an app if your in Scotland for the midge forecasts.

Fly screens have always worked for us to keep them out of the van. Johneen is very allergic to mosquito bites and has used skin so soft in the evenings.
It isn't great for day use in the sun as it oil based.

There are two types as far as I can remember.

If you have an oily lotion on your skin flying insects dont like landing on you. In Spain we use a lotion called natural honey, whether or not is has honey in it I dont know but it does work especially with the bitting types.

Citronella candles are also supposed to help keep bugs at bay.

I dont think its a good idea to spray on the fly screens, the chemicals it the spray may damage them , anything with DEET in it is supposed to be good , we use the Avon spray it seems to work and my skin is beautiful too<_<

You must be special because they don't work for anyone else. Midges are so small they climb right through.

From what I have read, it seems the spray doesn't stop them landing on you or biting, but they don't like the taste so don't suck - leaving no mark or itchyness.

But that's only what read :)

This the thing, someone said the blue bottles and someone else said the green, then i read it has to be the dry oil spray.

DEET is the harmful ingredient.
I worked for a company who sold expedition equipment and there were repellents which had different strengths of DEET.
One customer who bought the strongest spray came back to show us that his plastic watch strap had deformed with the spray on it.

Might be a good idea to keep DEET away from fly screens in case they have a plastic content. LOL

I got blue label spray as I read on a midge forum that this was the one that worked as it contains citronella . Also read of a 300 person mini experiment with people using a placebo, deet and skin So, with skin so being by far the best.
It's working for me so far

I was in Northumberland recently and the midges there were as big as seagulls and the only thing that was any use to protect one was the Avon stuff. I used 5 bottles over 10 days and never got bitten once. Others had sprays at 15 quid and were eaten alive well almost. One guy came out in bumps all over him.

Digger they were unbelievable and I was out all day and all night for 12 days in them. Thanks God for Avon and it reminded me of the first girlfriend I had as she wore Avon perfume and it was the same smell. :D

Some guys felt these midges had stripes and I wouldn't doubt it looking at the bites they had.
