Newcastle Festival of Flight

 ·

Anyone know of specific areas campers could stay over for the festival of flight this weekend?

I know there is a small car park camper vans often use but is there a delegated area for the festival this year?

Many thanks

Yes it's on on Saturday, bad weather will stop some of the older planes from flying and I really would like to see the Lancaster, have the problem of work but might be able to get around that.

I contacted the office last week regarding stying over and they informed me that it wasnt allowed.

I intend to be in the Shimna Carpark beside the rock pool early that Saturday and the weather is not giving the best, so overlooking the Sea from the comfort of the Hymer probably is the best idea.

Hopefully meet some of you other Criacers down there

I was in Newcastle sun and mon this week.
Town was packed, no parking spaces in any car park xcept bryansford avenue which has a height barrier. Even bloody bridge was full.
Anyone going would prob be best to go late fri night.

I parked in lay-by on bryansford avenue, short walk into town.

Rang the tourist office and parking is in Donard on the grass above the playing fields and at the regional college on the castlewellan road, but it's not for overnighting! To do that you apparently have to register with the caravan club, like that's going to happen

They will probably check your membership card, can`t understand why people spend thousands of pounds on motorhomes but refuse £40 to join a club.Even if you only use it a couple of times a year it is good value for money.
Don`t take this personally but I think you all a load of plonkers

Well I know what you're saying and coming from. This is my 40th year as a Caravan Club member and I agree that it's good value for money.

To join or not join a club is down to the individual, personally I don't feel the need to join a club as I don't think any of them offer anything which is of any personal benefit to me, but each to their own.

I totally agree it is individual choice, but we seem to read moan after moan from craic members re lack of parking, free parking etc, we all know that there will be limited parking at some venues particularly overnight for large vehicles, all i am saying is there is alternatives that can work hand in hand with wild camping etc for not a lot of money.

There are a number of subscribed members here who are in more than one club but others like myself who are not in any. I have always looked at the moans as you put it as sharing of information and the discussion of the topic, sometimes to death and sometimes going way off topic, but that's what makes this forum a fantastic place.

That's why I considered joining one of the various clubs, because of the lack of moaning. I have heard that moaning is banned from all the Motor Caravan Clubs and they are not even allowed an opinion so they don't moan.

I hereby swear to be a member of said club and that my opinion gland will be removed upon joining.

Oh hang on that's communism!

Am I being facetious? yes of course I am :)

Everyone moans, it's a human trait and a human right. Some call it moaning, some call it constructive criticism and some even call it intelligent debate.

Because the majority of clubs do not suit all Motorhomers. Simple really, I do not do clubs, I do not need to do clubs and I personally find the whole "club scene" regimented organised fun.

Everyone is different, it would be a sad place if they were not.

I fully understand why people do clubs and a later stage I might join one, at this present time I have absolutely no interest.

Talking about clubs, do any one know what percent of Motorhomecraic members are also Motorhome club members and what clubs are they joined?

Please see this from Newcastle thread:-

Hi all,
I emailed DRD to find out about parking in Newcastle for the Airshow, this is their helpful reply.

Nick

This year Down District Council have allocated parking spaces for motor homes visiting the display. If you are arriving on the Friday you can park in the higher Donard park. This is available on the Friday and Saturday night to allow visitors to take in the three days of entertainment. If you only wish to come on the Saturday parking for motor homes will be in the South Eastern Regional College. Signs will be in place to direct you to the parks.
I hope this information is helpful to you. If you require any more information please contact me.

Regards

Hope that suits :D

I then rang the festival office earlier this week & asked them to contact Martin Valentine to confirm this. They rang me back with confirmation that FREE overnight parking is allowed on Friday & Saturday nights in the grass area the rear of Donard car park. No need to book with any club I believe.

That was a similar answer to what I got from the tourist office except they told me no overnighting allowed, but if it's available from Friday night then that's even better.

The area in Donard park set aside for the Motorhomes has around a dozen in it tonight. The small car park opposite the entrance to Donard park on the Killeen road has about nine in it, although it says no motorhome parking disabled only and not all of them have a blue badge. There are signs up at the sleeve Donard car park for no Motorhomes, which I would assume is only for this weekend.

We were in Newcastle at easter and the car park at sleive donard was taken over by unwanted guests in caravan and campers a bit of a mess to say the least.

Thanks Pheobe - we went down today and there were quite a few Motorhomes in the Carparks - Most Car parks infact had at least one Motorhome, hte one ins the upper Donard had quite a good spread - must have been a dozen - Even another Hessie but with different setout including drivers side door entrance :o POSH
I took a photo of her headlights for adjusting my beam deflectors as my own require adjustments.

Even the Carpark at the Swans Area had 4 motorhomes in it - however they got in there :o

Weather held - planes were late - sporatic - insufficient Red Arrows - so we went home fed with ~KFC. Seen the Lancaster coming in - HUGE

Good Day anyway

Red arrows were at 5pm, not the earlier two gnats which were in similar paint scheme to the arrows. All over, no rain and saw both the Lancaster and the Vulcan. Anyone down at bishops court would have had a view of all the incoming flights except the typhoon and the arrows. Great show and big crowds. I think you may have left a little early Hessy
