Hi all - like a lot of craicheads here i drive a left hand drive van originally imported from europe - most of these vans dont have ovens and mine does not have a grill either so heres the thing - with 3 gas rings what is the best meal you could cook in the van ?
yes its nice to visit a nice restaurant when visiting different towns for a change but when wildcamping or just chillin in the van what can you cook when your pretty much limited to a pot and a pan ?
spagetti bolognese is one of the best i know
Suggestions please !!

There's a Cookery Book called "One Pot Cooking" especially for campers and its great and has lots of tasty ideas. Mine is in the MH and the MH is not here but I can get you the details if you wish. Google it and you'll find it. Its well worth the money.

Three Rings - the abilities are endless. 8-)

Hessy has 2 and i haven't found an issue with catering for 4.
A good steamer and a double tier fry pan does the business for various dishes (c**k au vin, chasseur, stroganoff, Pan Fried Chicken with and Spuds :o )and for steaks etc i got a ribbed fry pan that covers both gas rings and gives a powerful heat for black and blue beef

Chilli beef is also a handy one as is plain mince beef, queen tatties and a lump of butter washed down with an elegant Carlsberg

BTW: i invested in a Combi Kitchen to use in the Drive away awning - Double hob rings & Oven/Grill. Great for Kippers not stinking out the unit

Well worth the investment  Sunday Roasts now on the Menu  Even on a Wednesday :D

I love a risotto and it is a good excuse to open a nice bottle of white wine. At this time of year asparagus is a favorite adding some parmesan cheese at the end, some fresh ground pepper ...yum.

Also pick up some nice fish on your travels, keep a little jar of capers and add some real butter and pan fry with baby new potatoes and a green salad.

I also do a pasta with a white wine sauce and prawns.

I always keep a pancake mix in the MH for breakfast and do eggy bread to mix up my breakfasts.

Chorizo sausage, chicken breast and pasta in one pot is yum too and a little goes a long way. You won't need oil as the chorizo will provide that so cook it off first.

Thai green/red curry with chicken or prawns and rice is also an easy one. Or at this time of the year stir fry fresh veg and add anything you want.

Hope that helps.

Another book that is a must for every camper is The Camper Van Cookbook, by Martin Dorey. Great book, even tells you how to make strawberry daiquiri's in a jam jar... after a few you could use the jam jar as your glass :D :D :D

well thanks everyone for the nice tips - when you think about it there seems to be lots of really nice meals to make in your van with just 2 or 3 gas rings - who needs ovens .
a glass of red however seems to make the whole thing even better !!

We've been caravanners up til now and always had to use sites. With this in mind, the best two pieces of kit we had, was a slow cooker, very cheap to buy and like all kitchen electrials, comes with a recipe book, the other item a halogen oven. The one that looks like a glass bowl with bright lights above. Both very easy to use and run, and both very capable of cooking with red or white!

Yes troops, like I said, when we were caravanning. You've, well you probably will really, no idea how much I'm looking forward to wild camping. We did it once while touring NZ and my missus got bit on the eyelid with a sandfly. I had to hide her for a couple of days, because people took one look at her eye and then gave me daggers! 🇧🇭
Still, don't think we'll have that problem on the Atlantic Drive 8-) ..

There's an app, naturally! I use it a lot and find it useful. It's called BBC GoodFood One-Pot. Mine is iPhone but I guess there's also an Android.

Enjoy...

We use a 3 tier steamer pot at home and we got one specially for the camper.
Chuck all your veg into the different parts and cook.

1)A dinner in one pot.
Bacon and cabbage (or turnip)-just put the bacon in the water at the bottom.

2)A packet of oxtail soup is great in the cupboard

Have your steamer cooking your veg
Fry some mince.add fresh onions and some peas from the steamer.add some hot water from the bottom of the steamer. mix the soup powder with a small drop of cold water in a cup and add.

you can substitute pork, beef, for the mince or even chicken.
