Fortify your camper

Recent posts regarding stolen campervans have got me thinking, especially regarding older campers (pre 2002ish) which are ridiculously easy to steal unless fitted with additional measures. We become very attached to our vans as they are like no other vehicle.
If anybody has any tips to make it harder for the feckers to get their hands on our vans then maybe we can share them. I’m by no means an expert so please feel free to improve on my suggestions if possible. They’re all pretty cheap but you may need a little help from a welder.

  • Swivel seat locked in reverse- If your drivers seat swivels then see can it be padlocked facing the living compartment

  • Wheels turned in towards path so can’t be pushed/pulled on slide body or spec lift- not unheard of for vehicles to be towed away to be started elsewhere

  • Locked in gear from handbrake- The standard gear to handbrake lock may fit but make sure that the gearstick isn’t short enough to unscrew the knob and pull the lock off.... http://www.amazon.co.uk/DUTY-H…stick+lock

I feel exactly the same. Why do we pay insurance? My take on it is that we make it as difficult to be stolen as possible but one can never deter the the determined thief.

Now that's a clever piece of kit and looks very simple to fit when parked up.

You just need to make it a bit difficult, Thieves will move on to an easier Motorhome. Our Motorhome is built on a pre 2007 model Fiat Ducato which is suppose to be very easy to open the cab doors. Two security measures that I did was to Fabricate two steel bars with a lock in the middle to tie the two doors together and I fitted a Fiamma arm type lock that swings across the Habitation Door.

I like that peddle lock Matthew. I must look at getting one!

Good thinking with the cab doors, that would be a great deterrent

I first came across the pedal locks on old land rovers, handy bits of kit.

I would hope claiming insurance would be a a very last resort. It's not only the money anyway, it's the thought of your pride and joy being stolen also.
I'm not scaremongering, just want to make owners of older campervans aware that their vans are quite vulnerable and highlight some easy measures to make life more difficult for the thief.
I may or may not adopt some, all or none of the above measures, they'll have to give it a go to find out! :D

Thanks Moomat,

I like the look of the pedal lock and might feel a little better about leaving her parked up if I wanted to head off on the bikes for a few hours if my camper had that piece of kit! Our camper was definitely broken into via the habitat door at some stage prior to us purchasing it as the door still has the hallmarks of being forced open. We have security locks on both the garage and the habitat door. I would be devastated if she was stolen even if the insurance paid out. Now that I have her done up the way I want.

I don't think the pedal locks are universal so make sure you get one that will fit your model ;)

We saw a camper parked up just outside Tallow over the weekend. A big black Rottweiler sitting upright in the passenger seat. Keeping an eye on things while his humans were off exploring the town.

I'll bet nobody in their right mind would risk breaking into that camper...

Going mad I didn't think to take a photo, it would have been a great shot.

I used to have a Rottweiler but the only damage he would do is like you to death I swear he was always smiling.
He was a beautiful dog and I got him as a present from my brother I nearly dies when he arrived with him. I was seven months pregnant!
