Perhaps a phone call to the council concerned could clarify it, to me the place is split into 3 areas, car park on top of the toilets (those that have been would know what I mean) beside the toilets and in front of the toilets beside the sea. Would all of these be controlled by the council or are some under the control of the DRD

Was at Balintoy Harbour 5/6weeks ago and was surprised no other MH parked up, when in the cafe I mentioned this to staff and was informed council will be allocating an area for MHs with service point I suspect similar to Donaghadee, so perhaps the height barrier may be to keep us out to allow construction etc. Here's hoping.

I called in at Ballintoy on Saturday the signs are NO CAMPING OR OVERNIGHT PARKING. The info i got was the warden is saying maxium stay of 12 hours and no overnight. So motorhomes are permitted during the day but not at night. It was the cafe which complained but this arrangment does not fix the problem it would make more sense to have MH's restricted to overnight parking and vacate the harbour by 10 AM. This would leave the parking spaces free during the daytime hours when the cafe is open and the place is busy with day trippers.

Bob Stay cool!!!! Find the facts out first by yourself then report back. these reports are so inconsistent a proper investigation is needed first so we all dont jump to the wrong conclusion.

I have contacted Moyle council and can confirm the info in my previous post is correct. At present the warden is enforcing existing bylaws and monitoring for 2 weeks and reporting back today.
I asked him to pass on my opinion that it would make better sense to allow MH's to stay outside the cafe hours for which I would be prepared to pay a fee for the use of toilets & water.

We were in Ballintoy on Friday night, we have a self converted campervan and weren't asked to move but the two coach built MHs that were there were spoken to and informed of no overnight parking, one of them did leave but the other stayed and neither of us were forced to leave (the warden didn't come back). I think it's a shame as those who stay overnight act as sort of guardians and surely put off vandals, etc by our very presence. Also we weren't aware of this new rule before we arrived quite late on Friday night (it's not on the councils website) and had nowhere else to go by then. Just seemed a bit of an overreaction to a problem easily solved by the sort of suggestions above! Also the warden wasn't able to explain what the penalty would be, you'd think they'd have to.

It's a number of years from we stayed there, it was lovely but the lady in the Cafe came out and started writing down the motorhome numbers so we didn't pay her a visit, she made us feel unwelcome. That's a good idea about staying the night but moving out in the morning. I hope the Council listen to that suggestion.

Statement form Moyle District Council - September 2013
Quote
The Council is exploring with funders the potential to develop a Aires De Service and dedicated parking spaces at Ballintoy Harbour. (Stated 24 September 2013) In the meantime the best advice that can be given is to contact the council if daytime parking is required.
Have there been any more updates on ballintoy I phoned the council at the time and was told that camp site owners had complained as well as the cafe he also told me some motor home owners made a mess when emptying their toilets in the public toilet block which I don't believe the day trippers make more mess also the council voted against the aires the fact that the cafe and the campsites close in the winter months seemed to make no difference

I'm sure it's ok to camp overnight during the winter months when all the sites are closed and there's no one about. Would be interesting to ses what they would do.

Although I did not get much wildcamping done this year, I am coming to the conclusion that in future I shall embark on a course of Civil Disobedience.
Assuming that one might be fined say £50 for 'breaking the law', then if one is out for say 20 nights in one season and caught once then this represents a charge of £2.50 per night.
There are certain variables of course that need to factored in. Such as,
Number of nights away,
Late arrival and early departure reduce possible 'capture'
If one does not only frequent the 'honeypot' locations one reduces ones likely hood of 'capture'
The low priority of enforcement in each council area, and the reducing levels of manpower due to austerity.
Perhaps it also needs a few people taken to court and a public platform created to publicly put our point of view over to Authority and the press
Lets face it how many people have actually been prosecuted so far.
Cross border civil disobedience may well be unenforceable if speeding, parking and toll misdemeanours are not followed up.

Mr Aidan McPeake, Director of Environment Services, explained to members that the company who had entered the lowest tender had withdrawn and the next lowest tender -1 - was almost £2,000 more, Cllr Joan Baird, UUP, proposed option three, that Council do not proceed with the project.
Cllr Baird told members that following the news last week she had been approached by several members of the private sector -2 - who had made provisions for campervans and mobile home parking at their facilities and said the general public had a great strength of feeling against the provision of facilities in Ballintoy.
Cllr Baird said if Council were to move ahead with this proposal it would be public competing against private companies and was -3 - against government policy.
In an echo from last week's meeting, Cllr Baird also voiced concerns about - 4 - shower facilities in the harbour area encouraging overnight stays. UUP Cllr Sandra Hunter said she felt the provision of a shower would be an asset to sports people in the winter time. She added that council - 5 - needed to be seen to be enforcing their own bylaws in regard to overnight stays for motor-homes. She added that the tender was also away over budget.
1- because they always do more than is required
2- but they dont understand what we need so charge too much
3- how are all the other councils doing it then ?
4- bad avice or not lisining to what advice thay are getting. They dont know what Aire de Service is
5- Why were that thinking of installing and Aire de Service?

During peak times campsites are full of caravans parked for the season and they don't really want people who just want to stay one or two nights and they are closed off season on a few occasions we could only stay in their car park but were still charged the full price
