LPG tank

 ·
Posted: 09.07.2014  ·  #1
Hi folks,

I'm new here, and new to the world of motorhomes, so I'm afraid I'll be annoying you with lots of questions till I find my feet a little..

A camper I'm looking at has a built in LPG tank - is this a common feature (it was imported from the continent)?

Is it difficult to find LPG around Ireland these days, or would I be better just running the equipment from a normal Calor cylinder? (there is also a fitting for one of these)..

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The tank isn't usually fitted as standard but some people do it as an aftermarket addition. Gas is available at any garage which sells LPG for cars but it is difficult at times to find, best thing is if you use it find somewhere close to home which sells it and top up there before you set off each time. The calor fitting is possibly for a backup supply in case the main tank runs out.

American vehicles often have these tanks as standard. Most forecourts with lpg will allow you to fill as many folks have lpg conversion on high litreage petrol engines, however one UK supermarket which I read about this morning won't let you fill for cooking and heating. Can't remember which one it was, but they can't tell if it's for road use unless you point it out to them. It's in this month's MMM

The texaco filling station in Tullamore on the Portlaoise road does LPG. If you are on the bypass tie exit for town centre, five minute drive.

Hi - anybody heard about a fitting which allows you to fill your gas bottles at the service station using lpg - i have heard it costs way less than paying for a gas cylinder from the dealers .

There are two ways of doing it, the refillable tank and the fittings it comes with or the adaptor off somewhere like ebay which allows you to fill the normal dealer type cylinder. The ebay type route can cause problems as not all garages will allow you to refill those cylinders and there are possible legal issues around doing so. Saying that there are some motorhomers who do it very successfully without any bother.

From what has been posted on these forums, it is not that easy to find garages that sell LPG in the South.

There are quite a few options and different companies doing LPG systems that you can refill. Different sized bottles and underslung tanks, also the "illegal" way of buying an adapter and filling ordinary bottles which has some risks if you are not careful, but as FC says, plenty do it, I did it myself for quite a while.

It works out half price in the North, so a massive saving, especially in winter. I am not sure of LPG prices in the South?

I love it for the convenience, fill up with diesel and fill up with gas at the same time and with a proper system you don't have to wait until the bottle is empty as it cuts off when full, so you can put in £1 or £30 depending on how much you have used.

With the "illegal" system you have to run the bottles empty so you can measure exactly what you put in them, leaving a 20% gap for expansion.

Morrisons.
Aparently some guy set fire to himself and his van recently while filling up a gas bottle at a Morrisons filling station. No serious damage or injuries due to a couple of folk who leapt to the rescue with a fire extinguisher.
I suspect that this is why Morrisons have clamped down.

As an RGI , gas needs to be treated with respect , however , I like the LPG bulk tank system , a fill seems to last forever , and is a lot cheaper per kilo of gas than Calor bottles . It's getting more popular in the south too , I fill in Roscrea.

If you plan to keep your motorhome for a few years and get a lot of use out of it a refillable gas system is a great option.
We had a gaslow system in our last van for over 5 years and have transferred it to the new van.

I maintain there is a good saving.

If you are one of the people who change a 6kg bottle once a year you should carry on as you are.

I have 2 alugas cylinders similar to gaslow, fitted when living in the uk. They last for ages and if you go to a bulk gas supplier you pay 5% vat for heating not 20% for engine fuel. Great on the continent if you get the right nozzle adapters. I would have preferred an under slung tank but with my ducatto chassis and various other tanks around the chassis there was not enough room for a decent tank.

The list below shows a list of the Filling stations with Autogas in Ireland

I too have read occasional posts about motorhomers who have had a difficulty in filling their Gaslow (or other) system at filling stations but I have to say I have never had a problem in - Ireland (north or south) or in Italy
