Electrical question

 ·
Posted: 05.07.2014  ·  #1
Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can offer some advice on what I want to do. I've a converted LT35, there is an external socket for plugging into hook ups etc. My inverter is behind the drivers seat and only powers anything plugged directly into it.
What I want to do is have the option of using the inverter to power all the sockets in the camper when I'm not hooked up. Is it possible/safe?
Thanks in advance

Hi Dwaned and welcome to Motorhome Craic.

In short YES it is possible as Simon at Leisure Technical solutions has offered it to us as an option.
I am sure there he mentioned requiring a certain type of inverter to use for it.

We decided not to go for it as our only two things requiring mains electric are the coffee machine and the hair dryer. If my wife can do without the hair dryer I have to manage without the coffee(so I have been told).

I have no knowledge of electrics but I would suggest getting it done by a qualified auto electrician.

Thanks for the reply Mark.
Good thing is I know it can be done now. I'll look into finding someone who might be able to do it.

No probs. glad to help

As you have yet to complete your location in your profile I am unsure where you are but Leisure Technical solutions are based in Dromore Co.Down.
If that is close enough please mention Motorhomecraic if you contact him.

You will see they are a supporter of this site and advertise at the top of every page. The advert is a link to their site.

I hope you get sorted.

If you do that your charger will start to charge the battery's, so make sure you avoid that, easy for an auto electrician to sort

I had my last lt35 doing this as others have said make sure the charger is off when using the inverter. Here is my simple way I did mine I cut the lead between the mains input plug on the outside of the van and the vans internal MCB fuse board. I then added a standard mains socket next to the inverter this was wired directly to the outside input socket. Then the lead from your MCB fuse board I put a standard domestic 3pin plug on it. When you want inverter power you plug into the inverter when you want hook up you plug into the new socket you just fitted. You. An use a relay but I kept it simple and you can never have ehu and inverter feeding your sockets at the same time this way.

Did that make the pins on your out side socket live? Sounds like it would,
If a kid ever opened the flap it could be nasty,

How? you would need a lead with 2 standard 3pin plugs on each end to make it go live plug one end in to inverter one end into your new 3 pin socket that's connected to the outside that would make it live so don't try it. But you would never have that type of lead as its not needed and one end would always have live pins when plugged in so very dangerous. The way I did it the outside socket was connected to a standard 3 pin socket so in effect just an extension lead a kid could poke things in this end if they got past the guards within the socket but then they could on any socket in the van or at home. Granted when on ehu this one socket would not be running through the onboard fuses and MCB but you would only be pluging your lead from your onboard fuses MCB into it so not a problem. Unless you plugged one of your 240v things into it but still not really a problem as the ehu at the campsite should have an mcb.

I did it to an Adria Van twin this year , using the auto changeover inverter , aside from splitting the charger , you also need to split the fridge 220v from the system too , so the inverter isn't trying to power that . really , the simplest option is just to fit a couple of Inverter specific sockets , and leave the ordinary , fitted 220v system as is.
