Stopover near Omagh suggestions

Hi Folks,

We are planning a trip to the old family homestead locality; the Inishowen Peninsula. The route will take us from Monaghan to Aughnacloy and along the A5 to Omagh and onwards towards Buncranna.

I was looking for a suggested stopover near Omagh that might give us an opportunity to call in to the Ulster American Folk Museum and perhaps some other POIs in the area. I did check with the museum if they might allow us to stay overnight in the carpark but it wasn't permitted.

I had a look at the Craic Map and I saw two stopovers north of Omagh. One is a car park on Beltany Rd, Omagh, but there are no further identifiers; coordinates or anything else that might make it possible to find it. The other is Mellon Country Hotel. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this hotel and would they be able to say how receptive they are motorhome parking and then of course; how is the food.

Any other suggestions would also be very welcome of course.

Thanks folks,

digger

Hi Dave,
There is a campsite called Sperrin Caravan Park on the Gortin Glens FOREST park edge about 4 miles out of Omagh. It sadly lost its former glory when the council closed down the neighbouring Ulster History Park and sold both the building and the campsite into private ownership, but is in a pretty setting with walks through the forest. A link road at Gortnagaron takes you across to the Folk park. I think it was 16.00 a night last year. The Milestone restaurant at Gortnagaron 2 miles is excellent, as is the Foothills restaurant in Gortin 4miles, with a scenic drive through forest, mountain and lakes, the road is wide enough with many bends.
I have heard of vans staying at the Mellon, they have an overflow car park which would be quiet on most nights, but the do have a country and western night one night a week which draws big crowds.
I have also seen vans overnight in the car park of the Silver Birches in Omagh.
As Brian says you could phone Omagh Accademical Rugby club, I know that club events have had meets there.
Unfortunately my driveway is too sloping, for an overnight, but if I am around when you plan to travel this way I may be able to sort out some space in a friends yard.

Thanks Brian for your suggestion.

Thanks Paul for yours. You've given me plenty to work from there. Ideally we would like to be able to park within walking distance of a meal accompanied by a few glasses of red and you have made a couple of suggestions that would allow that. It's also nice to know of a couple of nice drives in the area.

Omagh are hoping to install a Aires so hopefully all goes ahead and another town will enjoy the benefits that motorhome tourism can bring to an area.

It would be great to see another Aire. I just hope they get some advice from people who understand what is needed. There are so many being done so badly and costing the council much more than is required.

Could write a book on that, even when they do get advise by the time everyone has meddled it hardly ever turns out the same as agreed, often wonder why bother! still we are going in the proper direction, albeit slowly.

What actually happened was that we stayed at the Mellon. We were asked to stay on the hill behind some trees so that we could not be seen from the road, obviously no problem with that. We did have a meal in the restaurant that wasn't particularly good or cheap but then we did get the overnight stay so that helped.

Buncranna has a dedicated Aire at the back of the Tourist Office. It's a grand spot but is missing the one thing that is required; a 'disposal point'. The Tourist Office said that it hadn't been fully completed yet but that people are using the nearby public toilets. We ended up doing just that. Despite having the aire available we actually stayed for a night out at a lovely car at the water's edge beside the O'Doherty Keep. Apparently it's used regularly without any issues.

I have to say though we found a surprising amount of touristy things do do over the five days we were there and we thoroughly enjoyed the brake.
