New leisure battery

Hi all,
I will have to purchase a new leisure battery soon. Are any makes/brands better that others? I have a lot of space in the battery compartment, so is it any advantage to use a lorry battery rather than the leisure battery? I have a cheap fold out solar panel, should I stick this onto the battery when parked up on site? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Marty I'm not high up in this technical thing but I've had. A number of batteries over the years and I find the Gel ones the best. They are a little more expensive but in the long run better in my opinion. Probably someone will contradict me but then that's life and is what I've found to be the case.

You will get all sorts of conflicting advice on batteries.
I have always gone for the best I can afford and always leisure batteries.

I bought a new leisure battery from Halfords two years ago in a hurry before we went to France, it had a two year warranty and after 12 months it failed, I could not find the receipt for the warranty but chanced going back with it and to my amazement they handed me out another new battery with a further two years warranty, so if they keep failing while under warranty I will never have to buy a new battery. I reckon they were used to taking them back but they were very decent to deal with.

There has been a lot written both good and bad about elcosol batteries but apparently the uk distributor has gone bust so warranty can be an issue. I have platinum branded ones in mine and so far they work well, problem for me is lack of space especially height restricts my choice.

We had two elecsol batteries which failed after 39 months. They were replaced under warranty but I always thought the replacements were not as good. I have since changed the Motorhome and left the elecsols in the last van.

Thanks for the advice. Does anyone know if a big lorry battery is worth looking at? I'll probably just go to Letterkenny on Friday where I can choose between Donaghey's or Halford's for a gel leisure battery.

I think most large lorry batteries could be 24 volt.

Most lorries are 24v all right but they have two 12v batteries wired in series, and car or lorry batteries don't like constant charging and discharging

They don't like the deep discharges as Pat says, there isn't really any difference in the price.

If you are looking for some idea of prices for a long time I found the following company to be great with super fast delivery

Still find them super for Car battery but when I bought my last leisure battery found that my local
caravan dealer where the same price so bought local which I like to do if price difference is not too great.

I think that delivery to NI is covered but it was just to give a price comparison for the very large range they carry I think delivery was about £15 so you need to add that on

The surcharge can put them into the range of the local dealers, but its a good site to use as a reference point for sizes etc.

I just bought 2 115ah leisure batteries in Halfords today for €99.00 each . With a2 year warranty
And have installed them in my camper , so will be heading to France next month so will let you know how they perform as I had. A 100 ah battery must be original battery , installed a solar panel but it didn't last long with TV and sky box on ! So hope this works ok .

As far as I am aware 12 volt equipment is much better on the batteries than mains equipment running off an inverter.
I could be wrong.

I am of the same thought as you mark, the mains stuff on an inverter would have a high amp rating never mind the inverter running as well compared to the low amp rating of most 12v items.
