Can someone please advise on which roof aerial to buy, as the van I have bought is fitted with a wind up style satellite dish.

I am based in the north but will spend most of my week ends in Donegal.

I have read the posts in regards the type of tv to buy for coverage in the south in the form of a mpeg4, but which is the best type of roof aerial ?

I plan to get something with free view for sky news etc

Owners experience would be much appreciated.

All aerials are the same, there is no such thing as a digital aerial or a mpeg2 or mpeg4.

The only difference is, some are better that others.

I have just got a new type and you can read the review here: forum/topic.php?t=5877

Up until now most people go for a directional Status Aerial, the one I am reviewing is omni directional so no need to move it again, but old Omni arials were never as good as a directional, hopefully this one is different and so far has been brilliant.

Ok thanks I could stick with the dish and run it through a free view box I guess.

Use something like a i can free view box, I have an old TV that my father had in his van it's a Kenmark lvd 1586d.

I searched the internet for the spec but can't find out if it's mpeg4, if the free view box is mpeg4 does the tv play it's signal or do both have to be mpeg4.

Only the box needs to be mpeg4, the TV is only a monitor.

Most people with a dish never use an ariel again.

I would suggest a Status 560 Digital Antenna system A very well tried and tested piece of kit . That is if your dish does not work for you .

Digital signals work best with a aerial that can align on the correct polarity ie vertical or horizontal. Second point there are sites where satellite will not work ie Kilbroney as the signal may be obstructed. That said satellite is simpler as the tv does not require retuning each time.best have both if possible.

I have both, that is a sat system and an aerial which I use in stormy conditions or when I can't be arsed to put the dish up. The aerial is an avtex one which I can put up inside or outside the van, but you need to retune each time you use it and where as long as the satellite points at the correct one you don't

The aerial was got as a backup in case the satellite doesn't work or get a reception..

I hate that, you look up and someone has stole the sky - what a bummer o.O

Could be something in the wiring of your Motorhome that could be causing that problem.

Could your Van be over charging? was it connected to the EHU when it happened?
