hi, we went down to Freidrichshafen (lake contance) in Germany in July last year for a few days before going through the western tirol to Italy. Lake contance is great and Freidrichshafen is a lovely town. We went in to Austria an feldkirch and we bought a 10 day vignette for 15euro just before the border at a service station. We stayed in Waldcamping Feldkirch, 9 stadionstrasse (decent site which is a short walk from nice town). There were other MH there and it was a peacefull night. We then went on a small detour to Schrunns where we took a cable car up to the high mountains for a bit of hiking. Then on through the Arlberg tunnel toward Landeckafter We then went on to Nauders after a long but easy climb on the autobahn, the Arlbergtunnel was a good experience. In Nauders we just stayed in the car park of a restaurant after asking permission from the owner after we had a meal. I then cycled the stelvio pass from there before we headed on through the resia pass and down to Lake Garda. Its great scenery and im sure there is plenty to do in mountians, but we were on a mission to get to the sun !! The diesel prices were about 1.25E I think but if your thinking of going in near the sudtirol which crosses border to Italy then fill up first as the diesel prices are eyewatering (was caught at 1.94E per litre for a top up only thanksfully!! I would go back in summer for longer for more hiking in the future as the hiking trails are awesome and less busy than in the French Alpes.

Many thanks for this, I think our plan is to stay a while in Austria but I had seen on the internet that wildcamping is illegal in Austria but I do like the idea of having a meal and staying in car park of restaurant. We have done Lake Garda and Italy before so we are thinking of going from Black Forest and heading into a lovely place I have seen called Lake Wolfgang. I am obsessed with the different prices of diesel when travelling so will keep an eye out for those inflated prices....

Can I just ask what is the 10 day Vingette ?

hello chel, the vignette is used instead of tolls. Austria dont have tool boothes so the vignette is a sticker for window that is time stamped and allows legal use of autobahn. I think longer ones are available but 10 days were the minimum. kg

If you are over 3.5 tonnes you need a go box for the Autobahns.
