No hilton9 unfortunately. Even thought I got the pre MOT Test at Shelbourne Motors and they assured me everything was ok it failed on the handbrake. Back to Shelbourne next Monday and they pay for the re test. Will rebook it for Thursoday week. Shelbourne Motors were as amazed as I was when I telephoned them as their readings were very good for the hand brake. The service manager asked me was I use the readings I quoted him were right.

Bad luck jack I hate the feeling of driving away from the test knowing that you have to go back but at least they they will only test the handbrake next time, funny sometimes they would say that the brake just needs adjusted and pass you especially for a motorhome,it's not as if your not going to get it fixed

The guy was very good he did his best but the computer can't be altered. he must have tried about 4-6 times on it. Shelbourne Motors who look after it for me are amazed. The engineer phone me again and he can't understand it from the readings they got when they checked it 2 weeks ago. Maurice I might just follow you and empty everything out of it and see what happens. I'm going to Shelbourne on Monday next and it will be interesting to see what happens.

Don't forget to empty the tanks as both fresh and waste water are heavy in the quantities the van can hold

I can't actually see how the weight will affect the mot as it's a rolling road and the vehicle isn't moving, only the wheels turning, does anyone know?

On rollers the back of the van gets pulled down as the brakes are applied, the more weight the more it pushes the wheels. Well i think that's what it must be.

I wait to hear Shelbourne Motors take on it as Ive found them very good. There's a funny type of handbrake on the Renault Master and when they pre MOT'd checked it the same stuff was in the garage. I'm taking it over to Shelbourne on Monday.

If you ask me the whole thing seems a bloody (sorry for the language absolution required) farse. My Motorhome has only 9000 miles on it and to fail its MOT is unbelievable. Has been looked after by a Shelbourne Motors in a Portadown whom I have full confidence in and offer great service at a reasonable cost it baffles me. This whole MOT thing and Centres over here is just making me feel fed up with it.

I dint know about up north jack,

But I think It has made the roads down south a lot safer in my openion,

The amount of scrap it has taken off the roads (down south) is brilliant if you ask me, as some lads wouldn't bother to fix it if it didn't need to be tested,

Others may disagree but I seen a few eye openers and was shocked at the state of some of them,

But I agree with you about the 9000 miles and failing, (you need to put up more miles)

No doubt you will get it sorted, but I get the impression it's a tester with a chip on his shoulder,

its more like the computer says no. the brakes lights and suspension are tested and analysed to meet a certain standard all by a computer with very little input from the tester.

I don't know if that is possible anymore, John. I believe the testing area is full of Camera's now.

In my opinion the system here is far superior to any other in the UK. I would hate to think my vehicle would be a death trap to myself my family or indeed to any one else on the roads. One good reason for independent testing and hope that it will never be privatized.

I agree Andy.
It is a good system here compared with mainland UK.

Jack.
9000 miles ? You need to use it more. We do about 4000 a year in ours. LOL

I don't understand the purpose of cutting down the weight of the Motorhome before the test. I don't think the weigh the van in the south when it is tested. The first time I tested the van they sent me to a weigh bridge to weigh it before they tested it. If the authorities pull you up on the road and you are over weight with all your bits and bobs in it, it doesn't matter the weight it was tested at, so what am I missing out on ??

In the north they dont weigh you, the opinion is that the amount of stuff including onboard fluids can affect the handbrake test by pushing down on the rear of the van forcing it forwards on the rolling road when the brakes are applied.

Pat, they weighed mine last year 2012, but they didn't do it this year as all my details were on the system for 2013. All I needed was my driving license.

It was probably due to the RSA setting up the testing regime to clarify which test lane should be used. Light goods or heavy goods.

Same as. Weighed me two years ago and it was stated on the test result. This time there was no mention of the weight on the paperwork so I don't know whether or not they actually weighted it.

I doubt if my test centre weighs them, why would they send me away to a weigh bridge the first time. Are campers over 3500kg tested as heavy Commercials? would that be the reason for weighing on the first test.

Pat, I cant answer your first question but yes if your plated over 3500kg then it is tested in the HCV lane not the LCV lane and you pay a higher fee. But they only need to look at the plate to determine that. Whether weighting is part of the test or not I'm not sure. I had thought that it was but as I said this time out there was no mention of weight.
