Kerry/Clare advice sought.

 ·

Hi folks, we come home to the RV at the start of July for the guts of two months. I'm looking to stay in a few campsites along the cork/Kerry/Clare seaboard. We may stay put in one for a while if it's a place we love, close to the ocean and with great facilities. The sites that have tickled my fancy so far are -

Nangles in Doolin.
Dowlings in Glengariff.
Wavecrest in Caherdaniel.
Barleycove Holiday Park in Crookheaven, Skibereen.
Green acres in Castlegregory.
Eagle point Camping in Ballylickey. (*although this looks extortionately expensive and very rule heavy *** no kids cycling bicycles :( )

Does anyone have any opinions on these or info they could share? My preference is for hard stands, fully serviced (moving my machine to empty tanks is an awful bother), as it will be a long stay in each location a shop locally for food and provisions is essential, things for kids a must, we will have a hire car for the time my wife is home with us but otherwise it'll be shanks mare or a bicycle (if we are allowed :o )

Of course I've read the reviews and looked at their websites but the wealth of knowledge is priceless if anyone's actually holiday'd in any of them.

Thanks as always folks!

Negals in Doolin is very nice.
The road down is tight'ish for a unit your size but the coaches turn outside his gate so it is possible.

Good to hear you will get a deal.

It must be in the top ten best sites I have every stayed at. And that is a lot of sites.
Very well kept and amazing views.

When I first saw a photo of the site I thought the cliffs of Moher had been photoshopped in. I was amazed when I arrived that is was real.

I have spent a couple of nights at the Hideaway site in Skibbereen and found it to be a very clean and well run site. https://www.google.ie/maps/@51…!1e3?hl=en
It's on the Castletownsend road about 10 min walk from the town center. There is a lidle supermarket at the roundabout less than 5 min walk from the site. The Skibbereen heritage center is worth a visit. Loc 8 codes for both are:
Campsite WZ8-91-8PJ
Heritage Center WZ8-37-JZ7

Hi folks. Just back from a 5 week tour. Went to Doolin for campsite found the area adjacent to be a noisy, dusty building site. There appears to be storm repair work going on also new build. Might be worth checking.

I am not too sure what is intended by the above remark. I'm a new member and this was my first post. Given the conditions we encountered at Doolin a few weeks ago we decided to move on to our next planned stop over at Corrofin.

The building site is out side nagles on the left as you go twords the pier, it's the new coast guard station, I'd say it should be finished by the end of the summer,

Ken is such a great contributor to this site don't you think? he is always so good at giving his advice. i thin he rocks. he gave me plenty of advice when we turned up in our MH as pure newbies and he is my go to along with Pat and Ally and of course yourself, FC and the Reverend. lol
I swear I even read the technical stuff not that I understand a word. lol.

No need to avoid nagles as the site is 50 yards further on than the gate and when we were there last weekend we had no problem

There's also a new pier being built at the back of the ferry portacabins, so that all the boats can dock at the one time and also at low tide,

We didn't see any dust or disruption but it was the weekend when we were there and I cannot see it being a problem midweek either,

Looking forward to going back when the mackerel fishing starts

Thanks for the tip off, Ralphus - I appreciate you taking the time. I think it sounds ok though in fairness - it's in the opposite direction to Ferg O'Connors where we will be making plenty of noise anyway!

I suppose the beauty of Motorhome travelling is... If we are offended by any aspect of the site or works close by we can pull up our stilts and move on... :-)

Hi Whippy. You have to go to Mannix Point in Caherciveen it's just fantastic. It's right on the water and the scenery is breathtaking. If the weather is good there's no place like it.

Just spent a week doing just that:

Doolin (Nagles) - immaculate site, but its a significant walk from nearest pub, definitely not the few few minutes the descriptions would have you believe! Very few water points in main field - new annexe has water on every pitch. As for the remainder of the shops ie for groceries, - forget it! But still a great site, and beautifully kept.

Doonbeg:
Spent an hour getting there, from Doolin, - but it just couldnt compare! "Strand" - in Ireland implies a beach - none in Doonbeg! Sadly (as I know the owners are members) we turned round and left....

Tralee, Woodlands:
Wonderful in every respect.

Killarney, Flesk:
Run down, overpriced (€31)- had to try 3 elec hookups, to get one that worked! Water taps very scarce, as are grey water drains.
Facilities block is wonderful, nice hotel/pub adjacent, and fabulous Chinese next door.

Why didn't you turn and drive away again if it was that bad,

Re Nagles doolin, have a word with ken the owner and he would have dropped you to the pub, that way after a few drinks it's only half the battle back :-)

Doonbeg
Previous quote;
Spent an hour getting there, from Doolin, - but it just couldnt compare! "Strand" - in Ireland implies a beach - none in Doonbeg! Sadly (as I know the owners are members) we turned round and left....

As the owner of Strand camping in Doonbeg I have to reply to this.

There are two campsites in Doonbeg, one in the centre of the village next to one of the pubs, this is a static site with 136 park homes and No touring facilities.
Then there is ours which is less than 10 minutes walk to the centre of the village. Ours is a very small site with 20 pitches and is only for touring campers, caravans, MHs and tents. I am hoping that the person who made the quote above went to the first campsite, I.e. Not our campsite. If you look on our website and see the aerial shot you'll see our campsite is opposite Doonbeg bay, Doonbeg river. White strand beach is about 3 km away and is a blue flag safe swimming beach. Alongside the trump international golf course is dough more beach which is 5km long and excellent for walking, surfing and windsurfing. This is angling and kayaking trips availing from the pier which is less than 10 minutes walk.

So please if anyone is passing, stop and have a look and see for your self what the campsite and Doonbeg has to offer.

Regards Jamie.

Thanks for your post above John.
We are trying hard to establish a good reputation for this campsite as it is very very different from the campsite we took over in march last year. I think in the main we are getting there. The reviews on trip advisor, Facebook and actual feedback from the users is very positive. That said we know we can improve in certain areas and we are trying hard to do so.
It does help that we use a mh and use campsites and wild camp ourselves, we have also personally tested all of our facilities to ensure that the meet user's needs.
We have listened to lots of feedback from our campers and in particular their views on campsites near us. Several seem to like the fact there is one price structure based on humans in the party, no dog fees, no extra charge for hot showers, kettle, awning etc. just a per person price and if required 16amp electric at €3. Our laundry is proving to be a big hit as are the special deals we run throughout the course of our season.
All we want is people to take a look, and judge for themselves. We won't suit everyone's needs for a campsite but we reckon that in the main the majority who stay will come back.

I've stayed with Jamie, it is a nice site and they are lovely people. The beach is nice for a walk with the dog, but it is not a sandy beach to spend the day on. We'll go back there for a nice break. The views to the North are lovely; we could see the Cliffs of Moher [we think].

I agree Jon the beach immediately opposite the campsite is not one for spending the day with a picnic and sun beds more for walking and picking whelks and winkles. Yes it was the cliffs if Moher and the 12 pins on a really clear day.
