I am over the moon to tell you all that I am heading to UCD Veterinary hospital tomorrow to bring home my baby Penny. Penny jumped down from her arm chair last Tuesday at about 5pm and lost all power of both her back legs. As some of you know Penny - she is an adorable bichon frise aged 3 (last month). Luckily I was there and scooped her up and headed straight to our vets. It was very distressing for her and I as she was in shock and was shaking uncontrollably. Our vet gave her a look over and pain killers - sent her home for the night. We went home in shock both of us to return at nine in the morning. I stayed up all night with her - I am still not too sure who was more scarred her or I.
Back over with a very very distressed and worse dog by nine in the morning. The vet said she would do a full neurological exam and x-rays and to come back at three. We didn't want to say it but I think we were all thinking the worst. When I went back at three I was told that she had probably blown a disc in her back. We could take her home and just nurse her or we could head to UCD the following morning for nine! I didn't hesitate for one moment. We would head to Dublin, Paul booked the day off, my mother came to stay with Faye and we left at six, after another heart breaking sleepless night of seeing the terror in her eyes and no movement.
Thursday Penny went to surgery and had two areas of her back explored on the back of the CT scan. She had blown a disc and another area had slight damage.
So if anyone thought I was in cranky form at Vantastival I apologize - I was a little bit out of sorts.
We called to see her on Monday on the way home and she was so excited to see us. All banadaged up with a tiny catheter in place. I cooked her some sausages (her favorite in the MH before we left Dundalk) and she ate a little. Another heart break to leave her there.
UCD have been absolutely fab, they call everyday with an update and tell us about her progress. They could not have done more, she has had aqua therapy and physio. She can go to the loo again on her own, can't stand or walk yet but she can flex her back legs and the signs look good!
Now why am I sharing this with you all
1. I am soooooooo excited because I am off to collect her tomorrow.
2. I have no pet insurance she was 3 years old and our last dog didn't need a vet because he got out on the road.
I had a good look last night and to be honest I would get a max of about €1,200 towards her bill. I expect to get a bill of anything between €2,500 and €3,500 from the hospital and probably another €200 - €250 from our own vets.
Do you all have pet insurance? How has that worked out for you?
Anyway I don't care about the bill, we can do without the take aways, night out etc as long as I don't have to see her terrified little face looking at me like I should be able to fix it for her.
SHE IS COMING HOME (sorry had to shout that!)
