Penny is coming home!

I am over the moon to tell you all that I am heading to UCD Veterinary hospital tomorrow to bring home my baby Penny. Penny jumped down from her arm chair last Tuesday at about 5pm and lost all power of both her back legs. As some of you know Penny - she is an adorable bichon frise aged 3 (last month). Luckily I was there and scooped her up and headed straight to our vets. It was very distressing for her and I as she was in shock and was shaking uncontrollably. Our vet gave her a look over and pain killers - sent her home for the night. We went home in shock both of us to return at nine in the morning. I stayed up all night with her - I am still not too sure who was more scarred her or I.

Back over with a very very distressed and worse dog by nine in the morning. The vet said she would do a full neurological exam and x-rays and to come back at three. We didn't want to say it but I think we were all thinking the worst. When I went back at three I was told that she had probably blown a disc in her back. We could take her home and just nurse her or we could head to UCD the following morning for nine! I didn't hesitate for one moment. We would head to Dublin, Paul booked the day off, my mother came to stay with Faye and we left at six, after another heart breaking sleepless night of seeing the terror in her eyes and no movement.

Thursday Penny went to surgery and had two areas of her back explored on the back of the CT scan. She had blown a disc and another area had slight damage.

So if anyone thought I was in cranky form at Vantastival I apologize - I was a little bit out of sorts.
We called to see her on Monday on the way home and she was so excited to see us. All banadaged up with a tiny catheter in place. I cooked her some sausages (her favorite in the MH before we left Dundalk) and she ate a little. Another heart break to leave her there.

UCD have been absolutely fab, they call everyday with an update and tell us about her progress. They could not have done more, she has had aqua therapy and physio. She can go to the loo again on her own, can't stand or walk yet but she can flex her back legs and the signs look good!

Now why am I sharing this with you all
1. I am soooooooo excited because I am off to collect her tomorrow.

2. I have no pet insurance she was 3 years old and our last dog didn't need a vet because he got out on the road.

I had a good look last night and to be honest I would get a max of about €1,200 towards her bill. I expect to get a bill of anything between €2,500 and €3,500 from the hospital and probably another €200 - €250 from our own vets.

Do you all have pet insurance? How has that worked out for you?

Anyway I don't care about the bill, we can do without the take aways, night out etc as long as I don't have to see her terrified little face looking at me like I should be able to fix it for her.

SHE IS COMING HOME (sorry had to shout that!)

Well done Penny, since you told me the story last wend i have been looking up pet insurance for my 2 German Shepard it aint cheep.

I noticed the Gemma the 1 we had with us at the wend is limping today 🇧🇭 🇧🇭,I saw a vet program on channel 4 last night, one guy whose dog got lame had to pay 4000£ to get the dog right again he had no insurance.I afraid if it was me the dog would have to live with the limp as i just could not afford it.

Well sure most of you know that our dog has 3 legs ... Polly & a car met when she was 18 months old. Initially they left her 24 hours to see if she would survive the shock, then we had 3 main options -
1. Put her to sleep
2. Send her to a vet in belfast to try & put the v badly injured leg back together (£1 - 2,000) - Our vet said that she would probably still need the leg off as the breaks were so bad but they would still try & decide after a few months what to do next or
3. Amputate front leg (£400)

We didn't have & still don't have insurance. The front leg was amputated 2 days after the accident & Polly was up trying to walk within 20minutes of coming out of surgery. She was home the following day & has never looked behind her.
The only things she can't do are walk on a wooden floor or a surface that would be slippery under her feet & jump down from a chair/sofa (but she can jump up!).

Everyone loves her & we are just so delighted to still have her.

I hope Penny mends quickly, love from Jill & Polly xxxx

Excellent news Siobhan!

Expensive, we don't have pet insurance for Rufus, never had it for any animal. Vets seem to charge like solicitors, robbing barstewards.

Glad she"s back ! We"ve insurance for Fizz (black and tan Jack Russell) and Perry (cat). We"ve never needed it, but Fizz was hit by a car 18 months ago, she was soooo lucky. I thought I"d be all "hard and tough" with our animals should the worst happen.... Not a bit of it, particularly as I saw it happen, heard the bang and picked her up off the road, luckily, apart from a gashed head, she recovered after a visit to the vet and a few days rest. Taught me how close we get to our pets, particularly our dogs.

Just got a licensees for my dogs, check out pet insurance next, i would be more worried about what they could do to people or other dogs, then Vet bills. They are kept in an inclosed area but you could climb in 🇧🇭 🇧🇭

NFU gives you free third party cover for pets as part of household policy.
I have a kerryblue that would attack anything in her domain.
Trespass at your peril :D

Thank you all for the kind words. She is eating and is trying her little heart out to stay up in my arms. I think my crutches have been replaced ...lol Bless her.

How Penny getting on?

She is delighted to be home, she is well in herself and eating. No movement as yet in her back legs but I am doing physio four times a day. They shaved her back, her ear and her front paws so she looks a little odd. But she is pain free and that was my main concern. We have a hoist for her so when she wants to go somewhere she starts and we lift her back end for her. It will take time but it is just great having her home.

Penny says hi to Poppy! :D

Great to hear the news re. Penny Shiv, didn't get to chat to you much last time. Hopefully we'll see her with ye at the next meet. We don't have pet insurance either but we probably should with our two. It's never a priority until something like this happens.
