Ring off Kerry and Dingle

Hello we are from Belgium and we are travelling to Ireland this summer...
Our camper is 8.60 meter long and we would like to drive the Ring off Kerry...what is the best direction to do this..?? How do the buses drive the ring and is it better to drive the same direction..??
The second question is it possible to drive the R559 on the Dingle island...???
Thank you verry much,
Maripossa

Very good questions mariposa.

The buses drive in an anti-clockwise direction around the ring of Kerry and you'd probably be better going with the flow.

The R559 wouldn't be my choice with a very large motorhome, but it isn't impossible. I've been corrected here before. I guess it all depends on how confident you are when negotiating narrow winding roads... It is beautiful route and should not be missed.

Even though the road is quite narrow, there are staggered pull in areas for large vehicles to pull in and pass. Darn it, you have me wanting to go back there now!

Go with the flow!
I did it clockwise, driving a LHD, I wanted a good view of the sea, boy was I sorry, it was painful meeting all of the Buses and having to pull up to let them pass.

We've done it in both directions and I think the best views are anti-clockwise anyway, as well as being easier trafficwise.

I did both the summer before last. My van is over seven meters so a little bit shorter than yours. I actually think the Slea Head drive on the R559 is more stunning than the Ring. But it is definitely not for the faint hearted. My attitude is, if buses can do it then so can I. But as Kevin said it is all about being confident. You will need to keep a sharp lookout for the next pulling in spot and make a quick judgement call as to whether or not you can get to it before the oncoming traffic.

If you are really nervous about it but still want to do it remember it gets bright here in summer around 4am you wont meet many coaches then :D :D :D

Hi

Your better to follow the coaches around anti clock wise, it's worth nothing they go around early in the day and tend to be gone halfway by lunchtime.

The R559 should be fine, just take your time and enjoy, there are many places to see and enjoy out there.

One thing to watch for is sat nav's are currently sending all vehicles that wiant to travel from Dingle to Tralee over the Conor pass, this is only passible in a car and has been closed a few times due to larger vehicles getting stuck !

First time I every went on holidays in a campervan was about 10 years ago in a borrowed van to kerry. We drove around the ring of kerry in a clockwise direction meeting all the coaches coming against us. A bit of a nightmare for someone new to driving a wide van.
A few days later we moved on to the Dingle pennisula and not wanting to make the same mistake, drove around it in an anti-clockwise direction, only to find that the coaches go round that one in a clockwise direction. Murphy's law!!

Lol! We met another Belgium family doing exactly the same trip as you :)
The interesting part to their story was they had travelled it 40 years ago in a horse drawn gypsy caravan!
The gentleman had recently lost his wife & he was doing it in his MH in her memory.
