Roof leak

Hey im total new to this site and totally new to the campervan scene but we've wanted one for years and finally got our wish last year only to be caught with a bit of a lemon :'( :'( :'( anyway we took her to the doe last year cost us 2763 to get the engine and rust repairs and few other things like pumps fridge etc. after 3 gos it finally past so we got 1 or 2 weekends away at the end of September and stored for the winter. I checked on it a few times over the winter and it seemed fine but when we decided to get it ready again for spring we noticed a lot damp spots and on closer inspection there was lots of water near the back door,on the ceilings in toilet and cabinets in the back part of the camper my partner is a carpenter so the inside work he did himself and change the cabinets we'll need a new back door also. The water is coming from the roof and when we looked there was chequered plating welded on so we lifted it and discovered there were small holes everywhere as well as big holes where the plating was bolted down :-(. What i am wondering is i have seen a product online called liquid roof
http://www.caravanroofrepair.co.uk/about-liquid-roof-product ,its in the uk i couldn't find an irish site that had it and will cost about 300 for the whole roof which is reasonable has anyone used this or if not what have you done to fix your roof. Our van is 89 fiat hymer we love it but its just started out negative experiences so far hoping this summer we can get some use from it thanks so much :D :D :D :D :D :D

Was the chequered plate only a walk way or did it cover the entire roof? Wurth do an excellent product called bond and seal which you could use to stick down a new sheet on the damaged area. it comes in tubes like silicon. I don't know about that rubber product but I would imagine it could get very grubby and hard to wash and I don't think it would be suitable to cover big holes

Thanks Shivster and thanks for the welcome :-) Pat the chequered plating was on about 3/4 of the roof there is a lot of damaged areas in different places they are small holes all over the top and also 6 large holes where it bolted down although when inspected there was only water damage to about half of the cabin inside none on the front part and none on the upper sleeping area

Never knew that Liquid Roof stuff existed, reading the website it looks like great stuff. If it was me, I'd just buy it and apply it, nothing worse than water getting into your van.

If you do decide to use the Rubber product, I would imagine that it would be very important to get the roof spotlessly clean before applying it. I would be inclined to wipe it down with white spirits and fill the big holes with something like Wurth bond and seal if you are refitting the Alu. Checkered plate make sure it is spotless also and I would be inclined to bond it on instead of using bolts or screws, should you have to use bolts or screws make sure they are of a material that won't rust.

hi stephanddoody, I have a hymer 544 of similar age and have been all over europe in it with family, hang in there and it will be worth getting it sorted as they are great vans. I had a bit of water through roof that was coming from the roof hatches. I took them out and re-seated with bituminous sealant (normal gutter sealant), messy but bloody good and keeping water out and since its on roof it doesnt matter what it looks like. I also painted over it when it has cured. As for holes on roof, the same stuff (must be mastic type sealant that wont shrink) will also seal holes in the aluminium roof. hymer often had a roof box that was fitted in factory and was drilled through checquer plate. I took mine off and sealed holes with same sealant and have had no probs since. I also went the holel way round the perimeter of the whole plate to be sure. Then take it to Spain and let the sun dry the bejaysus out of the roof :-)

I would suggest tech 7 as a sealant - it's a good bit more expensive than regular silicon but great stuff / it is available
In many colours ...

from the owners of a 1985 Mercedes hymer ,we came across Panabond all weather sealant, from a company called DYCON in Wicklow. This is one of the best sealers available and they have a further range of similar products. We have no connection with the company but if you have ever had a roof or window leak in bad weather-this is one product that really works !!
good luck

Thank you.
I did a couple of trials with it against Tech7 and Sika 221 , and it was noticeably better . The Tech7 was very disappointing , for such a well known product .

Wurth also do a "heavy duty" version of Bond and Seal , not quite as flexible , buy OMG it is mega strong.
