The opening of a new £500,000 walking trail on the mountains looming over the city means hikers and sightseers will now be able to enjoy a spectacular panorama.

Divis and the Black Mountain offer spectacular views across Northern Ireland

The mountains rest in the heart of the Belfast Hills, which provide the backdrop to the city’s skyline. The rich, varied archaeological landscape is home to a host of wildlife. There are walking trails along a variety of terrain: through heath, on stone tracks, along boardwalks and road surface.

The property contains the peaks of Divis Mountain, Black Mountain, Mount Gilbert and Armstrongs Hill, and also the headwaters of the Clady Water, Forth River, Ballygomartin River, Collin River and the Crumlin River.

Heather Thompson, National Trust’s Director for Northern Ireland, said: “Since the National Trust started looking after Divis and the Black Mountain, it has been our objective to regenerate this once-inaccessible landscape into a destination for outdoor recreation and enjoyment.

“This is a very special place and we hope to welcome many visitors to take in these spectacular views of Northern Ireland and beyond.”

For 50 years, these mountains were forbidden territory because the Ministry of Defence used Divis for reconnaissance, but it has been opened up to the public since it was acquired by the National Trust in 2005.
