Can't seem to get any hot water from the truma water heater thingy, the heater works from the thermostat and blows hot air but the boiler just puts water out underneath the van? Previous owner said something about the red button needed to be up for it to work

Yes your dump valve is open.
Pull up and fill boiler with water.
You might need to hold valve up until water level in boiler rises

Dump valve is to stop the contents freezing in cold weather, it automatically dumps it on some vans, others it has to be opened manually.

Should it not be down? Up to empty? It might not be an automatic one. I can't remember and mine is different.

After reading my German instructions and using google translate you pull up the red knob to close the valve then you open the taps to hot and fill the boiler till all the air is exhausted from the system and that's it good to go, only trouble is mine won't stay up...... (Ooh-er missus!) gonna check the little fuse inside the control as I'm getting a solid red light on the panel

Can you try a clothes peg to hold it up?

Is the van warm enough as they dump the water below 8deg, try blowing warm air via heater or hair dryer at it first.

Ours acts the same as yours, I put a key ring on the top of the valve and connect it to a small bungee bicycle carrier tingy and releases after a few hours and it stays up then.

Yes there is a temperature sensor on the side wall on the inside of the van on ours which activates the dump valve in cold weather, as John said you could try a small bit of heat on that.

Turn on the heating for a few seconds and let the boiler fill at the same time it should keep the dump valve closed, my one does anyway,

It seems to over ride the temp sensor when the heating is turned on but make sure you are letting the boiler fill at the same time as it's not recommended to run the heating with the boiler empty,

just a thought but would gas supply/pressure have anything to do with it along with only one ring lighting on the cooker and the fridge not lighting on gas/mains/battery? i'm getting the red light on the truma control panel too

Might seem a stupid question but do you have any gas. There could be a blockage in the gas line/regulator but it won't stop the boiler keeping water in it

Might be a good idea to get the gas system tested and serviced, the red light says there is a fault but that can be anything from no gas to circuit board problems. The lack of gas pressure allowing the cooker and fridge to light correctly means there is either a leak or lack of supply. I don't think you are supposed to heat the boiler without water, but warmth is required to get the dump valve to stay closed.

That's what I said, a clothes peg. :D
Camper fridge doesn't usually have a compressor.

Unlike domestic fridges, caravan fridges have no compressor hence using less power to achieve the cooling effect. Instead, a strong ammonia and water solution is heated in a boiler. This causes the ammonia to evaporate. This gaseous ammonia is passed through an air cooled condenser where it condenses into liquid ammonia. This liquid passes though a small hole where it evaporates. As it this, it cools down drawing heat away from the fridge.

Who was service man? Was he a proper service technician that works on motorhomes/caravans or was he the local fix it man?

It he was the latter I'd get a second opinion if I was you, could save you a lot of hassle and money,

While you have it out check the gas jet for a blockage and give around the burner a bit of a clean as that may sort the fridge out.
